So I have a Maz Jr. head on the way, but don't know what type of cabinet to go with. I know I want a 1x12 for many reasons. However, I've only played with combos and never had the option to go with a closed back cab, or ported on for that matter.
Can you guys give me a little guidance on what the differences are between open and closed back cabs.
Thanks!

See for yourself. It's all personal preference, honestly. Closed back offers more thump. Way more, in Z-Best's case.

Well, not a lot of responses. Hmm, guess I just want to know what the general differences are. I don't have ton to cabinets to test. I guess more thump means more bass response?

I'll give it a shot....Open back cabs sound more well, open. By that I mean you can hear more frequencies and db's from any given spot around the cab. Whereas a closed back cab is much more focused or directional which means as you walk around the cab you don't hear nearly the range of frequencies nor volume you would if standing directly in front with speaker at ear level. Open back cabs spread the sound on stage much better so your drummer is better able to hear your playing, that may not be a good thing but whatever. A closed back cab will give more bottom end and sound fuller in some cases. I like to have at least one of each with me at a gig where I am unfamiliar with room acoustics. That way I can easily switch things around if my original assessment was less than the best. Hope that helps.

If you haven't tried a Z 2x10 cab, you probably should. Closed back is going to sound tight, but since the Z 10's are so tight, you may get the best of both worlds. A lightweight open back that sounds sweet and tight.
just a thought.

Stan and Paul hit the nail on the head with this one. The ported cab is gonna throw a little more air out the front, if that's where the ports are. Such as the case of the Z-Best, which may be the best 2X12 cab on the planet. I could see myself owning 2 or 3 of them. But it's a very loud cab. The 2X10 cab is amazing, it hits like a mule, yet it's very musical. The Z 2X10 cab with a Z open back 1X12 is AMAZING. Seriously. Bogner makes a sealed and ported 1X12 cab that is really nice. I only mention Bogner because I own one and Z doesn't make a sealed and ported 1X12 cab. It's truely worth owning a 1X12 open back, 2X10 open back, 2X12 open back, and a 1X12 and/or 2X12 closed and/or ported cab. I know, it's a LOT of cabs, but put together with 3 or 4 really good amps there isn't much you can't do, ever.

Another option is to purchase a convertible cab - one that can be either open or closed back. I'm not endorsing this particular maker of cabs as necessarily your best or only option, but here is what I'm writing about: www.lopoline.com/1x12convertible.htmlkc

Thanks guys...that really helps me out. I'm so use to open, but was thinking of trying something closed. I'm completely redoing things and have little experience with cabs. I'd love a 1x12 closed cab Z. I like that it would be more directional, thus eliminating some stage noise. I've heard Z is going to start making one so I may hold out.
I just don't have a need for a 2x12...to much volume for what I do. I may have to beg Mike to make them!
