Does anyone know how "stout" (or not) Celestions are? By that, I mean how much over the rated power handling can they take. In particular, the Greenback.
I picked up a used Z-Best this weekend and it has a Greenback and G12H30 in it. I'm wondering how safe it is to use with my 6545. I usually either turn the amp way down or attenuate it, so in most cases I should be OK, but in case I want to crank it just for fun...

I dont really know the answer here but I would be cautious. If you like the Greenback/G12H30 combination you might be wise to get one of Ted Webers 1225 speakers that is definitely overbuilt/tough enough to handle the extra wattage. Ted himself stated in the experts section that his speakers will handle 30-40% more than theyre rated at(dont quote me on that, check his thread out to get it straight from the horses mouth).

Yeah, I saw that post by Ted. That's what made me wonder if that was a standard thing to under-rate speakers as kind of a CYA thing for warranty purposes. I think I got a heck of a deal on the cab (and the Rt. 66 that was paired with it), so I'm not too worried about blowing a speaker in it - if I have to replace it I still think I'll come out ahead. As far as me liking that speaker combo, I need a little time with them to figure that out. These are the first Celestions I've had in a long time.

I will say that we rate our speakers on the conservative side, but I would also caution someone to not go crazy when dealing with a underpowered speaker! A 25 watt Greenback would be fine in a 30-35 watt amp, but not if you're slamming it beyond gig levels for a long period of time. Keep in mind that the GB is less efficient at 96-97db which is quite a difference when compared to a V30 or G12H, therefore your amp will not sound quite as loud and you will be tempted to turn up. Enjoy!

I wondered about pairing the less effecient GB with the 12h30, but I'll try it for awhile and see how I like it. Is that a common pairing?

There is not a "good" reason to do it (from a engineering standpoint) as it can cause phase cancellations, etc., but some do it all the time (Matchless for instance and prior it was the V30 coupled with a Greenback).
