Looking for opinions on using an alnico, either Celestion Gold or Weber Blue dog 50 (or open to other suggestions) in a closed back, front ported 112 w/ a carmen ghia. I've heard from a few users alnico blues don't like closed back. Is that the same for the gold or webers? I know the blue is a great match for the ghia but I want a higher watt speaker to use with more powerful z amps in the future; either a 66, ES or Ray. Is anybody using alnicos with a closed back cab?

I have always been told that alnicos need air to breath.... So I assume they dont work as well in a closed back situation as they would in an open back.

A port will give them breath. A tuned port will help even the frequency response. At least that is the usual goal of tuning a box. I always preferred AlNiCos in a tuned, closed box. But my experience is a few decades old. Just getting into the new stuff.

I currently have two closed back 1x12 Thiele design (Mesa Boogies) formerly with ceramics but now with alnico's one Weber-Blue and Silver. I got the idea loading with alnicos after reading reviews on this forum that it was acceptable to load an alnico in a closed back if it were properly ported ie Thiele as in the Z-Best closed back cab. So I tried it and it sounds balanced with a nice full low end. So far I have not gigged with the Webers in the Thieles. I did however once gig with an alnico Tone Tubby HE (I think) in the Thiele and it had a "bad" bass resonant overtone thing going on and I concluded never to use alnico in that cab again. To this day I do not understand what that was all about!? It may have something to do with the room interaction, dunno. You may have to trial and error it.

Thanks for the input. I'd be using with a Bogner cube 112 which has dual front ports. I don't believe they call this "thiele" design but I checked the boogie site and their thiele 112 cab looks very similar to the bogner; dimensions are close with porting on the one side. The bogner has circular ports at the bottom. The bogner cab definitely breathes and seems to have a lot of life for such a small, light, closed cab.. I guess that's why I like it, easy to carry but sounds big and rich.

I would think any tone match or mismatch with a closed back would be more about the cone than the magnet. Just my opinion.
