I've got a Straub Cantus ('69 Marshall Plexi 50w clone with boost) for which I am ordering an Avatar Vintage 2x12. I wanted Scumback H75/H75LHDC, but Avatar offers loads of Celestions at great prices it doesn't make sense to order it unloaded. What would you suggest for a mix of classic rock, hard rock, and alt. rock cover tunes?
FYI, I already have a ZBest for my 6545 so I'll avoid the V30/G12H30 combo out of redundancy and the G12M Heritage would be in danger of blowing up;' other than that- what two?
Some basic stats on the offered Celestions are below:
Speaker Watts Range Fs Sens/Loudness Magnet Scumback Similar
G12H Heritage 30 55-5000 55 100 50 H55
G12H Anniversary 30 75-5000 85 100 50 none
G12-65 Heritage 65 80-5000 85 97 35 M75LHDC
G12M Greenback 25 75-5000 75 98 35 M75?
G12M Heritage 20 75-5000 75 96 35 none
Vintage 30 60 70-5000 75 100 50 none

I've never really bonded with the V30 sound. For Marshall Stack roaring, they're in their element; I never found them to be versatile enough for what I wanted though. They are quite in-your-face, if that makes sense.
In a 2x12, each speaker need a power rating at least half of what the amp's total output is, or it will be in danger of popping. For example, I have a 15w Blue and a 300w EVM in a 2x12; the total power handling of this cab is 30W, or twice the Blue's rating. Anything more and the Blue is at risk of popping.
So with a 50w amp, each speaker needs to be 25w. Well, that's if you plan on having it cranked to the ceiling regularly.
IMO, there's not THAT much difference between each of the speakers you mention, with the exception of the V30. The G12M heritage vs the G12M Greenback is not a decision I'd sweat.
Why not try a G12M and a G12H? If you got plenty of bite to your amp, this will smooth it out and give a huge fat bottom with singing mids.
DISCLAIMER: I don't have much experience with the speakers you mention, so follow this advice at your own peril.

if you're gonna stay with Celestions the two "best" options in my opinion are the Vintage 30 or the G12H Heritage. i have a 2x12 avatar cab loaded with G12H Heritage speakers that i use with my KT-45 (similar wattage to your plexi clone) that sounds great. be warned that the G12H speakers sound horrible at first, but break in nicely after only a few hours of use. at 20+ hours they sound real sweet. if you're concerned about the possibility of blowing the speakers go with V30s. i have a 100 watt jcm 800 combo loaded with V30s that has a "balls to the wall" rock sound. for the type of music you cited either speaker should work out nicely. i don't have much experience with the G12-65 so i cannot comment. good luck.

I've heard good things about the G12H Heritage so that'll be one of the two. Not thrilled with the V30. Anyone have any experience with the new Heritage G12-65?

Just from experience and maybe preference, I like what Weber is doing with all of his speakers. He seems to get a better tone, and no cone cry. Check out his versions under his British section, I don't think you can go wrong.

A lead 80/ V30 combo sounds good. I had a Soldano 4x12 w/ 2 80's on bottom & 2 30's on top. It sounded incredible with the AC50 head I used to have.

For the Marshall thang I fully feel Greenies are the way to go, If it were me, I would get two of the Greenies that Dave @ Avatar 'breaks in" and relables and never look back. It will be "rated" @ 50 watts but will handle the amp IMO unless you keep it dimed all the time and hit it with a boost, and if ya do that your deaf anyway so what speaker makes no diff Curt

Is that the voice of experience, Curt?
FWIW, agree on the Greenback thing for a Marshall style amp. Really just considering the numberous variants of the Greenback. I'd like Scumbacks or Webers, but since I'm ordering an Avatar 2x12 I thought I'd try the GB variants Dave offers first: G12H Heritage, G12H Anniversary, G12-65 Heritage, and G12M Greenback. The question is- Which two?!
