Curious to know, good and bad, what the experience was like. My DrZ journey has gone Z28 (12 months) to Maz 18 (6 months) to Maz 8 (18+ months) ... and while I've had a lot of success with the Maz 8, there are more and more moments lately where I miss the simplicity of the Z28. What you should know: - I play a G&L ASAT Classic Custom
- Stage volume is a HUGE concern for me (typically I have to run the volume and master around 10:00 when I play live)
- I like a bright guitar tone
- I use pedals for gain
- I don't ever get to crank the Maz (and generally don't care for the sound of it really hot)
- I never use the onboard reverb
So, those are the details. To me it seems like maybe I should go for an M12, but I really like the Studio Combo size (and weight) of my 8 and again, volume is a big concern. I feel like, after years of searching, I just got to the point where I can keep my sound guy happy and still enjoy my tone... but since the M12 was designed for pedal users and I am such a big one, that puts me back on that side. Thoughts?

I haven't switched from a Maz 8 to a M12, but I have switched from a Maz38 to an M12 and have done extensive comparisons between them. I know that scenario isn't exactly what you're looking for but if you want I can try and help. Just lemme know.

I did. The M12 seems to have a bit more headroom, and does not distort quite as fast. I play a lot of outdoor gigs and the M12 is better for me. If I played more indoor / restaurant type gigs, I would prefer the Maz 8. Plus the Maz 8 has more available sounds; it's a tad more versatile. The M12, well, fewer knobs, fewer possibilities...but then again, it is used widely as a pedalboard amp. Both are awesome. It just depends upon your needs....

If you don't use reverb and you don't use the MAZ 8's effect loop, then the M12 likely would be a good alternative. It has more clean headroom than the 8.

what was wrong with the Z28? Too loud? Do you have a Brake Lite? Never played either the Maz8 or the M12, but I think the M12 would be my preference - the fewer knobs on an amp the better, in my book anyway

I did, and then circled back to the Carmen Ghia.

Never played either the Maz8 or the M12, but I think the M12 would be my preference - the fewer knobs on an amp the better, in my book anyway Discovered that I just don't care for 6V6's... especially at breakup levels. Did like the simplicity a lot though -- and that's really what this is about. Headroom is not the issue at all. Generally speaking, the Maz 8 has more headroom than I can use. But, all the same, I know the M12 is probably a bit louder than the Maz 8 and I don't want to get into something too loud... especially since it took me this long to get an anp I feel I can use without choking the life out of my tone by running the Master way down and maxing a Brake Lite. So... more specifically, I'm wondering if anyone has switched and missed the full complement of controls on the Maz or, perhaps, the Triode/Pentode option. I do use that on occasion.
