I've seen some folks use their Zbest cab laying on its side as opposed to upright. Just curious as to which way you have yours and why. I assume Mike Z. intended on them being upright since that is the way the logo is affixed. My Maz 18 head certainly fits the cabinet all nice and neat that way. Saturday night, out of curiosity, I laid it on its side and I thought it sounded even better than upright. I don't know why; maybe it was just psychological...

I think it has a lot to do with what type of surface you have the cab on. When I set it on wood or concrete (my basement) I set it vertical because otherwise it's a bit boomy in the lows/low mids. On carpet I like it horizontal. It's all in the ears really - I'm just really picky about that low-mid frequency. I really like having the extra feet though. I had my 2x10 built the same way and switch it around too.

Depending on my distance from the front of the cab I'll set it one way or the other. If there's a little distance I love it on its side, because then I get to hear both speakers doing what they do. Upright tends to give you mostly the sound of the top speaker. The sizes of our stages run from postage stamps to fairly spacious... We play a lot of firehouses and open air festivals in the summer and those are great because I can put 15 or 20 feet between myself and the cab. Some of our indoor gigs are so tight that the cab is almost on its back pointing at thje back of me head, and a step back would have me sitting in it...

tjstrat, I think you hit the nail on the head. I think the difference I heard was that I was hearing both speakers for a change instead of just mainly the top one. It sure sounds sweet that way (or rather, sounded sweet that way. Midway through rehearsal I blew a fuse and that was the end of that.). I was afraid that the sound would be mostly at my knees as I'm just maybe 4 ft. from the cab. But it sounded big and full. What an awesome cab!
