Hey Fellers,
After swapping out the 5y3 for a GZ34, I am still loving my M12! It's the perfect little brother to my Stangrays.
Upping the voltage really tightened up the bottom end and it went from a tweed sound to a more British type sound.....which I dig. With the Gretsches it's pure tonal heaven.
This is a great mod and I'm really digging it!!

Do it man. You won't be disappointed. I can understand why they lowered the voltage, and it does make using pedals much easier the way the amp is voiced with the 5Y3 in it. However. . .I don't use pedals. That extra bump in voltage really gets it into Ray territory and that's the sound I've been hearing in my head all these years.
I might branch out on which Dr Z's I play, but for now. . . I'm over the moon about the three that I have!

I changed the 5y3 out when the Doc said it would not hurt the amp. I like the way it sounds...more punch...a little more "in your face".
I've discovered the M12 is a fine acoustic amp! Bass @ 4:00 pm, treble @ 8:00 am. I use it with my nylon classical guitar. Try it, it might work for you.

Jess, I'm sorry you have sellers remorse. I've been there a few times myself. To say I'm enjoying the amp is an understatement. That Weber Silver Ten Alnico really suits this amp . I haven't tried my Red Fang yet but my Celestion Blue and G12 65 Heritage add another tone to this amazing little amp.
I hope you can find one soon, life's too short not to have an M12.

How did u feel it changed tone and feel and pedal friendliness lee?

Tone is unchanged IMHO. Pedal friendliness is also unchanged, again IMHO. Just gives a bit more headroom, and more fullness at low volume. Mine had been mushing out ever-so-slightly at high "street gig" volume (go figure, it's 12 watts). It holds together very nicely now.
I think this amp now will do it all! I've played loud street gigs with it before (with the 5y3), and it was "almost there" with a 100db Celestion Gold. And I mean LOUD street gigs. With the GZ in there it keeps the girth w/o falling apart up to a very loud level....Now, it (sonically) is very close to my dear Z-wreck even in perceived volume since the Wreck starts to distort nicely at medium/loud volume too.
And when you're back to a smaller gig, pop the 5y3 back in...Easy.....Awesome!

Glad you Fellers are digging on the GZ34!
Do any of y'all know what value bright cap is in the M12? I want to get a little more top end out of it, might change the bright cap out for higher value.

Just swapped out the stock bright cap for a 4700pf that I had out of a 76 Marshall Super Lead. Now, this mod might not be for everybody, but I LOVE IT!! Between swapping the rectifier tube and putting such a high value bright cap in, this thing has a ton of British chime to it. With my Gretsches it's perfect!
