I read in a recent post that the square 1 x 12 cabs are hard to find. Does this mean that Dr. Z has stopped making them?
Is there a sonic reason for focusing more on the rectangular design?

Perhaps certain heads wouldn't sit atop a square cab. I'm getting a 1x12 for my SRZ and that head wouldn't fit on the square.

Nope, the heads fit perfect on the old square 1x12's... and Yes Doc stopped making them... but I think what happened Doc ( correct me if I'm wrong) couldn't use THAT cab for his 2x10 ext when he came out with his speakers and to make things easier... keep costs down Doc tries to use the same cabs for multiple things... like the 2x12 combo and open back 2x12 ext cabs are the same... so when he went to the 2x10 ext cab with his speakers it was easier and cost effective to use the same cab for the 1x12 ext too... they are extremely small and sound amazing with both 2x10's and 1x12... Doc tries to keep the cost down for us and to help his products be competitive by having a great product at equal or lower prices which I appreciate we all get to benefit from... I'd love an older style 1x12 in black n wheat one day with one Weber 50 watt silverbell in it... they are a little taller and thats what I would like/prefer... but if I really needed a 1x12 I wouldn't hesitate to get another of the newer 1x12's to match set-up. sound is really good for such a small box... .02 worth What I'd like is a 1x12 combo box made to be a 1x12 ext speaker cab kinda like he does his 2x12's... that would be as good for me as the old style and a good compromise as he has those sizes in stock already for his 1x12/ 2x10 combos... Would be a bit bigger/ taller and look really nice, and I wouldn't have to angle the cab back so far to get the sound up where I like it ( I like tilting my cabs back a bit).... just a thought ;D

jgleaton,
Thanks for the input ... I guess that does make a lot of sense with respect to cost. Visually, I prefer the square vs. the rectangle. But both sound great.

Jason is absolutely correct regarding the rectangular cabs. I was talking to Doc on the telephone about one of my Zs, and I asked him that very question. He said that it was more reasonable to build the newer cab because it would accommodate both the 1x12 and 2x10 baffleboard. It was a business decision he said.
From what I'm hearing from owners, they both sound fantastic!

Now, could he use that same box for a 1x15 cab?

Now, could he use that same box for a 1x15 cab? No, because the cabinet is only 14" high.

I know this is more trouble but it would be nice if these cabs had the baffle mounted at say a 15 degree tiltback so the speakers would point up a little.

Someday I'll finish the solid front valance panel. Was thinking of Black tolex for the oposite scheme of a Srz_65 LTD ;D

tele62 - it might also be interesting to make a solid rear panel and leave the chassis slot open in the front.. you'd end up with a closed back, front slot-ported cabinet vaguely similar to the Z best cab. I have a Mazerati combo shell I've been thinking about doing the same thing to.
