I have a closed back 1x12 with a Vintage 30. (have not had this speaker long enough, or at high volumes enough to be considered 'broken in')
I have the 2x12 combo speakers of my Maz (G12H-30's)
And yesterday a Top Hat open back 1x12 with a Greenback arrived.
I usually play the Maz Jr combo with single coils, and the Route 66 with humbuckers. I originally wanted the V30 in a closed back cabinet to try to get the 4x12 sound. I thought it sounded nasil...probably having the highs cut off from the closed back.
But to test the Top Hat w/greenback I tried both the Maz (w/tele) and the Route 66 (w/Les Paul). (unplugged the combo speakers of the Maz)
In both cases...OH MY GAWD! The greenback in the open back cabinet sounded fantastic. But what really suprised me is that the Maz sounded better with the greenback, than the stock G12H-30's.
My question is this: Is a Greenback supposed to be brighter than a V-30? Because I want to switch speakers. Putting the v-30 in the openback and the greenback in the closed back. Reasoning: I want to protect the greenback with a closed back cab because I'll be pumping it (25 watt rating) with a Route 66 (32 watt rating).
Or is my V30 just not broken in enough yet? Or is the cabinet making the difference.
In all of this, keep in mind I'm attenuating quite a bit. I can't wait to try at louder volumes.
Man that Route 66 with the open back was stunning. All the highs that I've been missing came through. Extra bite, extra crunch. Couldn't put the LP down. Who needs a LTD SRZ-65!!
I will say at our last rehearsal (with the closed back) where I play much louder than my basement, the closed back did sound a lot brighter. Perhaps I need to be at a louder playing volume for the V30 and closed back to kick in.
