Why swap out a Blue for an EV in my 2x12 Z cab?
Well, it's more that I wanted to swap out the EV for a Blue in my Peavey 1x12 cab.
The problem was that my 1x12 didn't weigh much less than the 2x12 did! That EV is just a monster.
So I figured it would be nice to have a Blue in the 1x12 to give me a lighter, yet good sounding cab for smaller gigs, and save the weight of the EV for when I need a louder cab and put it in the already-heavier 2x12 Z cab.
I'm also excited at what the EV might bring to the Z cab-- lots of tight low end, percussive attack and good even balance with lots of headroom. in a live situation, i can mic either speaker, in between, or even both (channel hog!) and get exactly the blend I want.
I'm sure the Blue will sound good in its new solo cab home. And I'm well aware of the risks of running a 15W speaker alone with the 'Ray. The odds that I will blow this thing are slim to none, since I can't imagine getting to crank it up much, and if I'm going somewhere that permits loud volumes, I'll take the other cab. I know that swapping in the 300W EV doesn't do anything for overall 2x12 power handling (the Blue would pop at the same level), but I think this will be a better option for me overall.
Besides, if I *should* happen to pop the Blue-- I'll upgrade to a Gold:)
Play testing and reporting will follow shortly...

Allow myself to introduce..well, myself... HOLY CRAP IT SOUNDS HUGE! I suspect that a Gold+EV would be a pretty formidable combo at the 100W level, based on this experience. But the Blue and EV is to me pure magic. I kid you not-- the 2x12 with a Blue and an EVM sounds just ginormous. Beautiful, sparkly 3-d swirling highs and full, tight bottom. Mid is smooth-- not pronounced to me, and it just sits into the overall mix so perfectly. As for balance, the EVM and the Blue balance together so nicely that it's hard to tell that there are actually two separate speakers in the cab. It just sounds like one fablously full and balanced, smooth speaker. You get the sparkle and spank and snarl of 10s with the tight bottom of a 15, and all the yummy goodness in between. I simply must shoot a vid of this and get it up on the 'Tube. With a head-on video shot, the Blue would be on the left, and the EVM on the right, and you could actually hear a little difference in the headset. Oh, there's just one catch with this speaker combination-- one side of the cab is about 8-10 lbs heavier than the other. Justin
