I posted the following thread yesterday on the 6545 page, but thought I'd post it here as well, for obvious reasons.
= = = =
I've been contemplating getting a 6545 head. I love the idea of a great clean on one side and a Marshally OD on the other. I've also given some thought to an appropriate 4x12 cab, but have been considering a unique one to go with my RxES head (EL84s) and with a 65 Amps Marquee head (also EL84s) that I'd like to pick up. 65 Amps makes a ported 4x12 cab with two G12H30s and two alnicos, either blues or golds. My experience is that the alnicos work best with open back or ported cabs and with EL84 tubes. How would such a cab sound with the 6545 running into it? Would I still get the Marshall sound on the SRZ65 side with the ported cab and alnicos? Or does it work best with a more traditional Marshall-type cab (closed back, ceramic speakers like V30s or Greenbacks)?
Thanks for your insights.

I had a 6545 for a while, and I definitely thought it paired-up better with ceramic speakers than AlNiCo, when used exclusively one or the other. I used the amp through open and closed back 2x12's, but no 4x12's. The ceramics just seemed to deliver the punch of the amp better than AlNiCo's IMO. AlNiCo's will blunt the Hiwatt-ish craaang of the 45 side and the punch of the 65 side, IMO. A mix of ceramic and AlNiCo might be cool though. I've done that before with Weber Blue Dogs, and it was great sounding. Hmmmmm... I guess I'd say go with all ceramics, but everyone's ears are different of course.
If you get that 65 Amps cab (sounds like a cool one, by the way), I definitely would opt for the Golds over the Blues. I haven't heard the Golds yet, but I'd be very concerned that a cranked 6545 would overpower the Blues, even in a 4x12 configuration. That will be a 60 watt total cab, so the Blues would be right at the top of their power rating with the 6545.
I love the idea of a ported or partially open-back 4x12. I have a closed-back Swanson/DST 4x12 that I'm converting to an oval open-back shortly. A new back panel is on order.

I was able to try the 6545 on a Z 4x10 cab a while back, and although we didn't try the 65 side, the 45 side sounded deluxe. Those are all ceramic, and they certainly sounded great. Wish I'd had more time with it though. I would have liked to do a lot more testing.
