Has anyone tried the newer Sennheiser E609Silver mic for micing the cabs. I've got a buddy who loves his, says its much more transparent than the old tried and true SM57.
I figure for $99, you cant go wrong, just wanted to hear some opinions.
Thanks!
Harold

I A/B'd a 609 Silver with an SM57 and a Beta 57A. I liked the E609 Silver much better than the SM or the Beta. Has a better balance of High/Mid/Low to my ears.

I've always used a 57, but one time this summer a sound man used a 609 on my Mazerati and I really liked it. It's on my list of stuff to get...

Do you need a preamp to use a 609 (or a 57 for that matter)?

I Love both Mic's for different applications. I own a E609, the first reissue of the original 409. The newish E609 silver is a little harsher to my ear, But still a great Mic. I use the E609 for cleaner applications and an SM57 or 58 for more distorted territory. I'm really dig-gin the E609 about 3 feet away from the speaker on my GT Solo-Single, Class A NOS GE 6L6, Celestion Blue both clean and slightly distorted, and the SM Shure Mic's for the Beef. IMO the Sennheisers have an almost a condenser Mic like quality. I use both on the KT45. cause it's a monster clean or distorted.
Matt
P.S.Hey Skydog, a preamp is neccesary to drive either mic, they are dynamic mics so no phantom power is needed.

The Sennheiser 609 is the only mic I use on my cabs. Wonderful sounding mic, and can take the pressure levels without a problem. It really captures the sound of the cab magnificently. The design makes it so easy to place it right against the grillecloth.

Sennheiser 609 is a great choice and the price isn't bad either.

Well I did something different tonight and it came out awesome. I usually throw a sm57 infront of the speaker. But tonight I had my AT 4066 condensor on a mic stand, roughly angled 45 degrees high about 5ft away from the Ghia. Sounded awesome. Had the same tone as if you were standing up infront of your amp.

Where were you guys when I started a similar thread two weeks ago?
Anyway, I just got myself a new Sennheiser e906, and a Beta 57A, I also have the SM57.
I am loving the e906. Now I can really hear that detail of my Mazerati. I have never heard the depth and clarity with a SM57, on my amp.
I like the Beta 57A for the cab too, but not as well as the e906. The e906 has a hollowness to the sound, which adds space. I've been singing into the Beta 57A with it 8ft. away from the amp. The Beta just picks up distant highs and adds even more of the room.
As a side note, the e906 is also good for harmonicas, and as an acoustic guitar mic. Yes, really. It doesn't caputure all of the guitar, but it does pick up the low end. So, I've been using both the e906 and a Rhode NT-1 for my acoustic guitar tracks. I pan the e906(low end) on say the left, and the NT-1(mids-highs) on say the right. This gives me a stereo pan, and more low end on an acoustic guitar that I have ever gotten from other mics.
I am not a pro, so take this with a grain of salt.
