hey guys and gals....Just picked up a 100 watt penn custom overdrive head. If you haven't heard of billy penn's stuff, check it out! It's really somethin special. My question is, I have a Z best with greenbacks which is only 50 watts total.....Is it safe to run these two together, or am I gonna risk blowin my cab. BTW, I highly doubt that I will ever get the Penn to crank out 100 watts. Thats just way to darn loud. I also have an empty 1x12 at the moment that I like to take to smaller gigs. Any recommendations for a 12 inch speaker that would work well with a powerful amp like this. I'm a huge fan of vintage speaker tone, and I love the sound of greenbacks if that is any help.

Sounds like you prefer early speaker break up by virtue of using 25 watt speakers? What I am about to suggest is going to significantly reduce early speaker breakup but will provide lots of clean headroom. One possiblity would be to use a vintage Electrovoice SRO rated at more than 100 watts or a somewhat less vintage EVM 12L or 12S rated at 200 watts, some are even rated at 300 watts. One last vintage speaker I am familiar with is the Altec Lansing 411 rated near 100 watts I think. I have all of the above speakers and use them from time to time based on the needs of a particular project. These type of speakers can usually be had on EvilBay.

Most good amps will put out there max wattage earlier than you might think. I was told that my 50 watt JCM800 will put out around 90 watts when cranked. If your playing a 3-4 hr gig I would think that those Greenbacks will eventually go, over time. Try 2 of the Eminence Private Jacks, all the Emi speakers seemed to be working well for most people.
