After a long hiatus from the Celestion Vintage 30, I put mine back in the Z-Best (I had been using an Eminence Red Fang...and the regular G12H30). I just fired up the Prescription ES head and whew...it's such an intense speaker. I get a lot more perceived volume than its 100dB sensitivity suggests and it has a most extreme mid-peak that kinda makes me feel like my face is getting sandblasted off. I'm also getting some cone cry back for the first time in ages. I can see how these can liven up modern hi-gain amp designs and take high-wattage punishment, but for me, the Vintage 30 is not the greatest match for the more elegant RxES design. I'm already missing the Red Fang...even though I think the Fang is bit lacking in the mids and too sibilant up top. I'm planning on trying some of Jim Seavall's Scumbacks (pre-rola celestion replicas for those of you who haven't heard about them) in the Z-Best pretty soon - I'm think about mixing an 'M' and an 'H' speaker - get a little reedy greenback goodness with the bold tightness of a 55hz cone 'H.'
Any other thoughts on the Vintage 30? Or speakers in general...gotta love speaker talk!

Hey...
Just thought I'd mention (from another thread) that I will probably combine a G12H30 with a Celestion Alnico Blue in a Maz 38. I've been in touch with a few people, including Stu at Fat Sound, who love this particular combination. It might be something for you to consider.
