If a person isn't a big fan of blues in a Stangray, what is trade off to go both gold? if any? Cleaner longer?

If one is not a big fan of two Celestion Blues, they may not be a big fan of Golds either. In a lot of ways they are quite similar. I think you'll notice the biggest difference in the bass. The golds will have a little more bass response. The Ray has lots of bass on tap, but the blues don't reproduce as much of it as the golds will.

Not a big fan translates into bass response. I understand the Gold from what I read is a stronger blue but with more low end and thump which is what I am after. The farting out of blues has been the problem.

Well, in that case you'd probably dig the golds. They definitely have more bass response. I think the mid and top end of those two speakers sound very similar. The blue probably has a little more chime on the top end where the gold is just a little more rounded in the highest frequencies, but YMMV.

If you are after more bass, but still want the Blues sound....go for the Golds. They speakers really do sound very similar. That was my initial problem with the blues in my Ray to begin with. The weak bass response...you can turn the volume way up and the Golds hold the bottom end just fine.
I tried Blues, the G12H30's, Celestion Vintage Neo's, Creambacks, and Golds. The Blues and Golds sounded best with the way the amp is voiced. The Creambacks were great and held the bottom at a lower volume, but didn't sound as well. After trying a bunch of speakers, I'm conviced whatever the Doc puts in a certain amp probably is the best speaker for that amp. Blues or Golds or one of each...can't go wrong.

Ordered a new Stangray today from the nice gents at Humbucker Music. Jake is switching out the blues for 2 golds and putting it on the brown truck today. Should have in the arsenal by monday.

So Lumco what is your take on the 2 golds with the Ray? Do you like them and are they what you were seeking? I have a Ray head with a 2x12 open back Z cab with two blues and I am considering putting at least 1 gold in the cab if not totally swapping out the blues for golds due to same reason of the blues not holding the bottom end.
The blues are a great sounding speaker to me but when I push with a clean boost for solos, I am pretty sure the bottom end is falling out and getting mushy. Live I run the Ray's volume only at 9 o'clock and air brake down to 4 clicks. I use the boost for both clean and pedal overdrive/dist solos, Tele and Les Paul. I used to use a 1x12 cab with a gold with the Ray and I do not recall such a loss of the firm low end.

I love the Gold's...I can't compare them to the blue's though as I don't have any..I couldn't be more happier with the setup I have...Glad I went that way when I bought mine..Tons of low end and with a brighter sound that the Tele gives off it is sweet to my ears. I plan to purchase another matching Open Back cab and go blue-gold because I just traded for a Z Wreck Head and I want to be able to swap head\cab configs. I think the Ray with the 2 gold's will be hard to beat...I am loving the Ray
