Just got my Z-Best cab from 6strang and it sounds great! I was a little worried that all the hype concerning this cab would have my expectations too high, considering it's just a 2X12 cab. Yeah, it could hang with a 4X12 very easily. What a huge sound!!!!!! I'm very happy. In the near future I'm thinking about putting a Scumback H75 and M75 in there. Anyone familiar with these speakers? I'm looking for a great rock tone using a Maz SR, Z-28, Marshall 50 watt JCM800 Silver Anniversary, or hopefully in the near future a RX ES. I'm loving the sound of a G12H30/Wizard right now. This is gonna be my all around butt kicking rock cabinet using LP's, Strats and Tele's. Any thoughts? Jason

Nice cab. The Z Best is the only cab with Celestions that I've ever really liked.

jwr How do you like your Mar Silver Anniv? I had one for years and it hardly ever made it to the gigs. I probably could have played with the tubes in it more, but I never found the mojo that Slash and the Black Crowes seem to have found in it. In my opinion, those guys need the 65 side of my 6545 which is a monster!

The Silver is an amazing amp. I thought for a second about getting on the SRZ waiting list, but I've got that sound nailed between my Shiva and Silver. The Silver really needs the right tubes in it. I've got GT6CA7 GE's in the power section and they made a huge difference. The Marshall seemed to really like the GT 12AX7M's as well. From what I've heard of the 6545 the Marshall has a bit more gain, at least mine does, but the 6545 definitely has it's own thing going on. It's a very cool amp. But if you get a Silver and figure out what tubes to put in it, the amp can't be beat. With an Xotic AC Boost and the Z-Best it sounds amazing!!!

So my first test drive with the Z-best with a band was a blast! Maz Sr and Z-Best=lot's of low end. With a BB and Rc boost in front I had all kinds on sounds available. But that V30 is killing me, I just don't think I can deal with that speaker anymore. I was thinking of trying the Scumback H75 and M75 but now I'm curious to see if anyone has put a Weber 50 Watt Ceramic Blue Dog/Silver Bell speaker combo in a Z-best. If so, how is it?

I'm pretty sure Jayson Chance has the Weber 50w Ceramic Blue Dog/SIlver Bell in his MAZ 38 2x12 combo, and seems to love it. I know what you mean about the V30. That was the one thing about my ZBEST that I didn't like. I sold my ZBEST a while back, and went to an Avatar Premium open back. It came with 2 Alnico Blues in it, but they just weren't my cup o' tea. It is currently loaded with one 30 watt Celestion G12H30, and 1 Weber 30 watt Alnico Blue Dog.This gives me a 60watt cab that I can use with just about any head I need. I really like this pairing, as its a good blend of chime, and bottom. The Webers get alot of hype on this forum, and now that I own one, I can say they live up to it. I have found out that I miss the closed back cab for outdoor gigs, for the focused bottom they have, and will be getting another. But I love the open back for everything else. Much fuller spread of sound, and 17 lbs lighter! ;D Harold

Yeah, I've read a lot about the Weber Blue Dog/Silver Bell combo, but it's mostly in open back cabs. I'm looking to do a couple things with the speaker change. 1. Get the power handling capability up to at least 100 watts. 2. Get rid of that V30! If I could have the low end and warmth of the G12h30 and the clarity of the Blue Dog I'd be pretty happy. Maybe an Emi Wizard and a Ceramic 50 watt Blue Dog? If anyone has any suggestions or crazy ideas let me know.

I hear ya. But I have a couple amps that WILL blow that G12H30 when cranked. I think the cab sounds great, but I think it could be better with Some Emi or Scumback speakers. I'll let ya all know what I do and how it turns out. It could be a little while though, I'm looking to get a RX ES first I think. Jason

I've also got the stock zbest and it sounds different from (better than) any other cabinet I've ever played through, however, I can't say I'm very much of a speaker aficionado. You guys stated that you can't stand the V30 but didn't mention the characteristic about it that you don't like. For my education can you elaborate on it? Thanks.

I personally love the V30 in the Zbest, but I'm going for old school British rock and R and B tones which alot of others on this forum might not be after. I think it adds a nice presence and strong top end to the Route 66 as well as some nice quad style honk. Whatever that means ;D

The only 'quibble' I have with the Celestions, really ANY of 'em, is when you really romp on 'em with everything turned way up, they tend to 'rub' quite a bit. Z sez the marketing guys at Celestion call this "Cone Cry, reminiscent of the vintage amps of yesteryear.." But you don't need that when you're recording. But they still sound better than any of the alternatives, IF that's the sound you're after. Prolly shouldn't be playin' (or recording) that loud at my age anyway.

+1 for the STOCK z best. I don't care for the stock v30 by itself, but, combined with the g12h I think its a sweet, punchy cabinet. I have a blue dog 50 w alnico I might try for fun in place of the v30.........I bought my RT66 with the z best and I kinda look at that as 1 big combo setup. They stay together! I would like some more chime for my MAZ so I am looking at an avatar open back with the bluedog silver bell ceramic combination...........does anyone know if avatar sells his cabs empty? I know a lot of people change speakers in the z best, but, I trust Doc on this one. I mean, he could offer the z best with anything he wants to and he chose the v30/g12h combo.
LOVE myZBEST!

..............of course, to each his own. If something isn't what you hear as ideal in your head, then you SHOULD change it up.

I've talked to the guys at Avatar and at that time they wouldn't do an empty cab. But you could call them and check, they are really cool guys and will talk tone with ya. I've thought about getting an open back cab from them as well and do the Alnico Blue Dog/Silver Bell combo. I might get the cab with a Emi Wizard and Private Jack and put those speakers in my Z-Best. As far as the V30 goes, it's just a little rough on my ears in the lower and upper mids. I like the tone of the G12h30 a lot, but it's a little under powered for some of my amps(non Z amps) and I'm concerned that I'll blow it up. I played a Germino 2X12 cab loaded with Greenbacks and I liked it a lot with my Maz Sr so I think those 2 Emi speakers will do the trick for me. And if I'm gonna replace my speaker's in any of my cabs I'm gonna buy speakers from a company in the U.S. But I can understand why most everyone leaves this cab stock, it sounds great, but I need it to work with all of my amps and right now it doesn't as I have an ohm issue as well.
