Doping?

Perhaps this question has been posed and answered already. If so, my apologies.
What exactly is "doping"? I have heard this term used many times in connection with ordering Weber speakers but I haven't heard an explanation. Pardon my ignorance!
Thanks,
Daniel

19jmm68,
Thanks for the link. I visited the Weber page and found the term "doping" highlighted. Clicked on it and the definition popped right up! Now I understand. Thanks again!

Daniel,
I have two Weber alnico 12" speakers one Blue, one Silver and both without dope. I have yet to experience any unpleasant overtones or abstractions ie cone cry. Not saying that dope is not necessary just that the need is somewhat dependent upon one's playing style. I get a little gritty and aggressive sometimes yet have not had any problems. The speakers sound as good as I have ever heard a speaker sound and perhaps a little more complex or less muted, if you will, on softer passages without the dope. Just something to think about.

guitarstan,
Thanks for the comments. I'm especially glad to have someone weigh in who uses speakers with NO doping, since it appears most folks who have ordered Webers usually go for light to medium doping.
Weber says that doping helps eliminate various problems (ghost notes, cone cry) especially when bending or sustaining notes above the 12th fret. Have you ever experienced such a thing on non-doped speakers?
BTW, I think we have 'spoken' before. Is your handle "gstan" on another chat group?
Cheers,
Daniel

come to think of it, i believe i'm experiencing some cone cry. what's the difference between light and medium doping, and what is the actual product that I would use to apply to the speakers?

teleking36, I was told that regular Elmer's glue will work for doping however I would investigate that first. I am sure Ted Weber or perhaps Avatar would be a resource to check out. Daniel, I don't believe we have corresponded before but my 54 year old brain has been subject to failure as of late. I have experienced cone cry and ghosting on most if not all my Celestions and they come with dope from the factory. As of late I only use Weber's and Tone Tubby's. I occasionally hear an abstraction of sorts but only when playing loud and by myself. It has not caused me any grief and I like having all the potential tone unmutted. However, I don't play that loud anymore, not since my ears started ringing all the time . I guess one could have a non-doped speaker on hand for the quiet passages and the doped version for full throttle. I really think it has to do with your specific application. Most of my current projects are in a recording setting and speaker anomalies have not been a problem.
