Hey All,
I'm in search of a different speaker for my M12 1/12 combo. Have any of you tried any other speakers through the M12? I have the stock Greenback in mine, but I'm unhappy with it. At least, I think it's the speaker and not the M12 itself. I thought of trying another speaker in it to see if that makes a difference. Although the Greenback is a good speaker to some people, it's just not doing it for me. I am first gonna plug into my Celestion Gold from my Stang Ray and see how that sounds. I'm curious if a Celestion Blue would sound good? If I can't resolve this issue, I'm gonna probably sell it. It just doesn't have as my punch and low end for my taste. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Thanks, Jason

A blue or gold will sound terrific. I've tried both and am running the gold now. But if it's low end you are missing then you may be happier with something like a G12 H30. The blue and gold just aren't noted for their low end as much as they are known for creamy mids and shimmery top end.
Also, with the M12 you have to set the treble and bass with your ears and not with your eyes. I run mine with the bass at about 1 on the clock and the treble at about 10. Try setting your bass to where you like it and the slowly add treble from the bottom up. Just an idea.

Based on my experience, I'd agree that the Blue won't have much low end. THe G12H30 has much better lows.

Push the amp up tight against a wall and see if you like the low end better. If so, make a new larger back panel for a closer to closed-back design. You might lose some dimension but you'll almost surely get more low end uumph.

Don't like the Blue in it
Originally didn't like the Greenback, but then made peace with it, I have the Heritage version
Then put a Heritage G12H30 in , liked it a bit more, added a Jensen P12N for a 2x12, that is a nice mix
Liked the Gold a bit too
Now in a 1x12, I have a Creamback, but just got it, not broken in yet

Big Kahuna, I would love to hear your thoughts on the Blue with the M12. I just recently traded away my Maz18NR combo for an M12 head and matching Z 112 convertible cab. I have an 8 ohm Blue in the cab and am liking it but wondering if there is a better driver for this particular head. I have a 16 ohm Greenback sitting around and have been tempted to see how it compares to the Blue. I really liked the G12H30 in the Maz and kind of miss the low end that speaker had.

I'm considering a Creamback for my M12 or possible a Vintage 30.

After trying the stock Greenback (broken in with a variac), G1265, EVM-12L, Scumback G1265, 4x12 w/ Scumback PVCs, British G12H, V30, Eminence RWB and Tone Tubby H1E, the best speaker of the bunch was the WGS Blackhawk HP. Use it in the 1x12 combo and Forte 3D112.

I have a 2x12 Avatar cab (closed) @16 ohm - with two Creambacks. It's not a ported cab, and it's not a Z-Best. But it does sound fantastic with the M12.

I a/b compared a Blue and a G12M Greenback this week in my Z Convertible cab with the M12. I have to say they were closer then I thought they would be. The Blue was the clear winner in the end with nicer chime and less fatigue on the ears but I can see why the Greenback is a popular choice with the M12. The Greenback has creamier mids and handles heavy overdrive a bit better where the Blue just sounds amazing clean or with some light drive. I will be keeping the Blue but would not discount the M12/Greenback combo at all.

Old thread, but anyone tried the Scumback M75? Not the PVC. Curious.

I have a Gold in mine - no shortage of bass, but sparkling highs. It came with a V30 - sounded horrible. I like the headroom and rounded sound with the Gold, but I'm playing a lot of country with it. If I were to set up a cab for a different flavor, I'd try a Reaper. I ran one of those in a Two Rock 112 cab with my Maz18 and it nearly caved my chest in - huge, throaty sound.

A better question might be what speaker doesn't work with the M12.
It has the greatest tonal range of any 10-22 watt Z amp I've owned... so the lack of high in a speaker (greenbacks) doesn't seem to be a problem. Run it clean (tone controls low) and you have a nice volume range with speakers that have cone breakup. You can also get nice gain growl with those tone controls and push the volume output with a JBL or other high volume speaker.

Love Silver bells and,
I have been using a Weber Grey Wolf 50 watt with light dope...
GREAT all around speaker (basically a silverbell with a V30 cone and maybe a bigger magnet) and also great with the RX amps.

I've wondered about the Grey Wolf since it's release, but haven't tried one yet. I see they now offer it in an alnico version also. And I second Weber Silver Bells. They are great all around speakers. The new Celestion Cream Alnico is a nice speaker too.

Not as much to me... Just takes what's GREAT and what I like about the Silver and makes it BETTER, especially LIVELY in the mids...
I have been using it A LOT for a couple of years now...
It's one of the early ones and almost sent one of my Alnico Silvers's back to have it made into a grey wolf too.
I still prefer the Alnico Silver with the Maz SR and an Alnico Tone Tubby with the Maz Jr... but I could equally use the Grey Wolf with any of them... I prefer to instead use the Grey wolf with whatever 2nd amp (M12 / RX) I'm running WITH the Maz Jr (Tubby) or Sr (ALNICO Silver) for a little different mix / sound... works sweet.
I think the silver in it kinda smooths it out / sounding to me, the Cone does makes it a bit more aggressive in a GOOD way (kinda that lively thing like a Celestion Blue has going on) and yet smooth with good low end at the same time,
more of an open sound (little less compressed than the regular silvers are) and a nice amount of chime...
Just a Great ALL AROUND speaker and a good one to mix with others speakers like the Silver / Blues or Celestions...
To Me,
The grey wolf is the best/ my favorite all around British style speaker for ANY amp especially low volumes or can absolutely handle the higher volumes...
and
the New Dr Z 12" speaker may be the best all around more american style speaker I've heard with any amp... Low volume or high volume and anywhere in between... right up there with the Grey Wolf / Silverbells
Best two speakers I've played in a while...
But I'd like to try an Alnico Creamback... didn't like the Regular Creamback as much except with very particular sounding amps, but have heard good things about the Alnico. Not sure I'd like it better than an Alnico Silver bell though.
Grey Wolf Ceramic in 50 watt light dope after it's broken in is by far the best all around go to speaker for any amp I've ever played.

this is a gig we did at Thanksgiving a couple years ago... Maz Jr Studio Combo with and Alnico Tone Tubby and the M12 Head is running into the THD cabs top speaker which is a single 12" Grey Wolf 50 watt ceramic light dope. I've got the THD wired so I can use EITHER speaker or both together as a 2x12... the Bottom Speaker is a 50 Watt Alnico Silver Bell light dope. I usually run the Maz Sr into the bottom Silver if I want, and can run and RX ES into the Grey Wolf with it and a/b between them while still running the Maz Jr for a larger outdoor rig. But THIS little rig pictured is plenty and what i usually run a/b ing "between" the M12 and the Maz Jr... however... at this particular outdoor gig I ran them both on at the same time and it was pretty glorious sounding if I do say so myself.
