Arrived today, in great shape. Love this burst (sorry about the crappy iPhone pic): Just a killer guitar--nary a mark on her, clearly babied by the previous owner. Plays great, feels great, and the Lollar P90s are crazy good. She's a certified rock machine! What kills me about this thing is the execution--the quality of the workmanship is just through the roof. Fit and finish are completely flawless--it's a pleasure just to hold this guitar. Even the back of the neck is sunburst, fercryinoutloud. Very happy with this deal--the Mrs says I am officially not allowed to buy any more guitars.

I played the double cut one with a single P90....I still think about how nice the neck felt and how wonderful the instrument felt in my hands... the sunburst is real nice. Congrats on the new acquisition and your wife is right ... you won't need any other guitars now

You know, in a way that's true. This thing will do everything from Tele twang to crunch to singing, humbucker neck pickup tones above the 12th fret. Even the middle setting sounds great. Plus there's just a ton of that fat, greasy P90 nasty on tap. That's Lollars for you, though. I could easily (happily) gig this critter and never feel like I was missing anything, tone-wise. Very live guitar, too--tons of sustain, perfect setup. Great buy--very pleased. A keeper for sure.

To me not all of the super nice guitars feel that alive magic in them....I've played quite a few of the Suhr stuff at my ol' music shop and they are Sooo nice, but I've never been moved by one...HOWEVER the Collings was a real treat and I really connected with it. The volume and tone were very usable soooo I sure hope you get a that new gig of yours going where someone can listen to your new ride. I'm sure you'll be loving it. They seem like old soul guitars.

^^^ old soul guitars--exactly. Some guitars just feel alive--inhabited, maybe--and others just don't have the mojo. Generally it takes time for a guitar to get that old soul thing going on, but this one had it right away (it just kills straight in with the Z-28--holy moly). I have to keep reminding myself that it's six years old--it looks brand new.

NOW you know what I was blathering on about, eh Jon? My lowly LP Special is sure Special okay (I now get why they called it a Special), but I bet that Collings is just stellar! And aren't those Lollars something else? I always believed a Strat was the most versatile guitar out there - I have been proven wrong! I cannot believe the variety of tones I can get now......... ..... oh and I agree that it sounds fabulous through the Z28, but when you try her through the Remedy, be very careful or she'll bite your head clean off!

Sweet!! You mentioned everything except the beautiful sunburst on the top or that beauty Jon. Collings has the best 'burst I've ever seen. Yours is the model that originally caught my eye at my local dealer. I ended up liking the TV Yellow neck in my hands, but that sunburst one piece mahogany is a statement for sure. Big Congrats & enjoy~

^^^ Good point Mark! It's just too good when you find a guitar that plays perfectly, AND looks great! I love the way my LP S plays, just love it, but I would rather have had a cherry coloured one. Bottom line is what it sounds/feels like, of course, but get the looks too - nice one Jon!

Beautiful, Jon. OK to blame Pete for P90 lust and MarkT and me for letting you be seduced by the Collings. 10s or 11s?

Super nice Jon.... Really beautiful too. If you're ever down this way, you can tour Bill Collings' factory....It's a breath-taking venture..... I'd be happy to escort you, too! Congrats, Brother... I LOVE it too!

Nice one! I love the flame on the back of the neck on those. No detail is too small for Collings. They are unbelievably high quality fit and finish. Now for your next Collings purchase, how about a I35?

^^^ Next Collings will probably be an acoustic. Gotta save the nickels and dimes!
Pete--yeah, the Lollar P90s are awesome through the Rem. Perfect pickup match for that amp. If I'm taking the Rem, I'm taking the Collings, for sure.
Lee--man, I'd love to come visit out your way sometime. I want to do SxSW one more time before I croak--how far are you from Austin?

Mike--I think 11s. They're just a little awkward for me--when they get gunked up I'll probably switch to 10s.

Ow! 1895 GBP=about $2900 USD. That's what a new one would cost in the States. Worth the trip over here to get you one, Alan!

^^^^^^^^^^ Yeah, trouble is all the additional import duty and taxes over the US price. Next time I get over for Zfest, I'll have to try and pick one up used and walk it through 'Nothing To Declare'.

Import duty? Taxes? What are those exactly, hmm? Surely a working musician can carry the tools of his trade around the world tax free, no? At least, they could when I bought my Musicman Stingray Bass in Canada....... or if they couldn't, no-one tole me or the Customs people at Heathrow. It was a long time ago admittedly.

I purchased mt Tele in Memphis on hols in 2011 and calculated that with duty and vat it was still just slightly cheaper than Uk price. Buying experience was the thing though which was excellent in US in comparison to UK. Fortunately my flight got into the uk in the very early hours and no one was at customs so walked straight through. I was asked at passport control if I was a musician and answered" not proffesionally" and that was that.

Nice guitar, Jon - given that Collings started by making really fine acoustics, I am not surprised that applying that luthier skill to making electrics has resulted in some great instruments. I have not had the pleasure of playing a Collings electric, but would like to try one.
If possible, please consider posting some sound clips so we can hear how she sounds.

Thanks, guys! Yeah, it's a ton of fun. Very ballsy tone, just kills with all three of my Zs. Almost TOO nice--needs a couple of bar gigs (and maybe some buckle rash!) to really get it broken in.

Big Congrats & enjoy~ Not sure if it's a one-piece body--it sure might be, which would be crazy--but dang, this thing is super live when when it's plugged-in and interacting with an amp (it's pretty live acoustically, too, though for me that's not the real test). It really sings--and the body vibrates like crazy on sustaining notes. I've got other guitars that do that--my Nash Tele, both of my Strats, and the hollow bodies, of course--but none of the solid-bodies do it near as much as the 290. There's a lot to be said for that long mortise-and-tenon neck joint, seems to me--the extra rigidity makes a big difference. Remarkable guitar, and a lucky find. Thank you, Frank Coffin!
