Been really thinking about selling my Revelator Custom Tele. It has the most incredible relic job ive ever seen and plays like a dream. It should, it took almost a year to get the guitar after i ordered! It truly looks like a 50 year old guitar. anyway, the lollar pickups sound amazing, but i have just decided that the tele sound isnt really my thing. when i reach for a guitar, its either the strat or dual humbucker guitar. so i am thinking of either selling or trying to load it up with Harmonic Design pickups. they have a p90 design for both the neck and bridge pickup (super 90 and superchrome) that wouldnt require any modification to the guitar and look like the real deal. maybe i would dig the tele-paul thing more than a straight up tele. my wife says i am crazy to sell, but you know how it is with guitars and guitar players... curious if anyone has any experience with these pickups. decisions, decisions...thoughts are welcome. more pics to follow...

You are, in fact, crazy if you sell that guitar. :-)
New pickups are a relatively cheap thing to try, so give it a shot!
Maybe email the vendor & let them know what you're looking for. I've found both the HD guy & the Lollar folks to be very helpful & prompt with answers to my dopey questions. :-)

PUT DOWN THE TELE AND SLOWLY BACK AWAY! Seriously, when you have something that fine dont mess with it. Put it in the closet and play your other guitars for a week or two, then come back and give her a re-visit. If you still don't like it call me and I'll trade you my PRS CE 22 for her.

LOL Gene! The only reason I'm thinking of this is that it's been in the case for several months now. We'll see...

Do you need the cash? Do you feel guilt at having a guitar stored as an investment? If yes, then sell. If no, then try the different pups. You can easily get it back to original spec if you need to to maintain value. If the pups don't work out, and you answered no to the first two questions, then carefully store it away safe and sound as an investment piece, but DON'T sell it on a whim, just because you don't like Teles today. You may come to love them tomorrow. IMHO of course

fully agree with Pete. Very very wise! When I was young (a long time ago, LOL) I purchased a used 61 Fender Tele, I played it for a while but I didn't like it (I loved and I still do Strats). So I sold it for the same money I paid for it. It was the worst trade I ever did: today I love Teles... Keep that guitar, it is a dream.

I say keep it. Reversable mods like the pups you describe are fine. You waited a year for that baby. That's a lot of time, so give 'er a bit.

Not an exact comparison but I've had the HD S-90 in the bridge of my G&L George Fullerton strat for about 10 years now. It's obviously not a true P-90 but a great pup for beefing up the bridge tones while still retaining the "4 position" strat magic. I also have had a set of HD Z-90s in my semi-hollow ASAT Deluxe for about 10 years. Tons of great after market pup manufacturers out there to choose from but I've been very happy with the HD products.

jrudder,
I agree with the posts of others here: If you like everything about the guitar other than the sound, you should at least try changing the pickups before you give up on her. Grosh Guitars makes their own pickups and may be able to help you.
The sound of my mid-70s Strat had grown thin over the years, and I was really disappointed as I had expected the sound to improve with age as the copper in the pickups became brittle over time. Nice theory, but it did not happen. Since I love the Grosh pickups in my Bent Top, I decided to replace the stock pickups in my Strat with Grosh Fat 60s, and now she sings again. My Bent Top was custom made for me by Grosh, and they were great to work with, listening to what I wanted and making helpful recommendations. If you call them and explain the sound you would like to obtain from your Telecaster, I bet they can hook you up with some of their hand wound pickups that will deliver what you are seeking. If you drop Grosh pickups into her and it still does not change your opinion of the guitar, at least you will be able to sell it without regrets or second guessing your sell decision, since you will have made a good effort to make her sing with a voice you like.
On the other hand, if there are other things you don't like about this guitar, then selling it and redeploying the money to another axe that you will love is probably the right thing to do.
Good luck,

thanks for all the thoughts and suggestions. i spent a couple of hours with the tele this morning and i really do dig everything about the guitar except the tones! The bridge pickup is just too thin for my taste. so, after a bit of research this week, i think i may try a Lollar B.S. Tele bridge p'up...still thinking.

After a lot of thought, i think i have decided that i am gonna sell this. i love the guitar, but i guess that i am just a p90 and humbucker guy. the one exception, of course, is the neck pickup on a strat! I'll never get over that tone.
anyway, i will post on the BST later today or tomorrow...
thanks for all the advice.

have you looked under the hood at all? I've heard of some of those smaller manufacturers sending out some of their single coil guitars with humbucker neck routes. You might be one of the "lucky" ones and you could get a new pickguard for a P-90 and get a beefed up bridge pickup like the Fralin SP43 which would get you close to p-90s as well. You really don't want to lose a sweet sweeeeet guitar like that. I beg of you, just change the pups!

Yeh, I looked. I'd have to rout it to accommodate HB's or P90s. I guess I could just do that and keep theickups, pots, and bridge in case it was ever necessary to switch it back over...hmmm
