I have a Ray 212 combo and currently have 2 golds in it. It used to have 2 Blues in it, but I never liked the way they sounded. I didn't like the way it lost the low end sometimes. I tried have a tried G12H30 and a blue, 2 G12H30's, a G12H30 and a gold, and have settled on 2 golds. The sound quality it there in spades...but it is just still to loud. I don't like choking it down with a brakelite...it loses it's goodness to my ears with the brakelite. This amp is meant to be run to to sound it's best. Could I tame it with these new Creambacks? Are they along the lines, (sound wise) as the Blues and Golds. I am very tempted to try them out. Looking for input.

With your attenuator on, try using a transparent overdrive/boost pedal like the Timmy or EP Booster. Don't use much gain on the pedal, just enough to drive the front end a little. You may get some of that sparkle back and be able to keep the 2 Golds.

I went from the gold in a 1/12 cab open back to the creamback in the 1/12 cab. The amp I play through is the remedy. I really love the gold what a beautiful sounding speaker however it needs to be pushed to get the best out of it. I could never get the remedy past 20 watts. Since I went with the creamback I have been able to play at 40 watts no problem. It is a different tone then the gold though. I would describe it as woody and warm with a crispy top end. My speaker is not fully broken in yet either. Last week I was playing my strat through it an got some of the most blooming 3D like tones ever just loved what I heard and felt. Really sweet sounding cleans and nice slightly broken up tones all the way to crunchy overdrive/distortion. It takes pedals very well too and that is also a plus with the creamback its a great all around speaker for classic rock, funk, blues. Put it this way I don't miss the Gold. I can now get more out of the amps tone more so then the speakers tone. Don't get me wrong the gold is the bomb. The creamback just works better for me overall. It will def tame things down the gold is a loud speaker. The creamback is rated much lower and that is the key.

What are your thoughts about how the creamback would perform in a closed back (e.g., droping a pair into a Z-Best)?

You know cpa2guitar that is a good question. Im not really sure. I will say this much I tried the weber legacy's withe 30 oz magnets 65 watts
two of those in the Z-best and didn't like the high end mid range on those so I sold them and put two 25 watt made in England Celestion greenbacks
in my Z-best and man what a difference. Much better its that classic Rock 70's tone I grew up on. The only thing I would say is the creamback
sounds great open back or closed back in my 1/12 cab I actually have it closed right now. I wouldn't rule them out in the Z-Best.
They may sound very good. I prefer the 25 watt greenbacks in the Z-best.

Two different questions going on....
For the Ray: I think a pair of creambacks would do very well. The greenback speaker has a lot of similarities with the blue. Lush mids, recessed bass and attenuated highs when played loud. Of course there are differences in tone..especially the magnet difference. So I think a pair of creambacks, with their mid focus would sound very nice with the Ray. I actually started a thread in the 'ray section, wondering about pairing a ray with a creamback in order to lower the volume. In general, I do seem to like ceramic magnets anyway.
The Ray is a scooped amp...in that it has wonderful highs, incredible firm lows..but the mids are a bit recessed. That's why the ray sounds so good with the gold/blues...which are midrange focused speakers. they counteract the scooped tone of the amp. I never tried H speakers with the ray, but I think it would be terrible. The H is a scooped response speaker. So you would have an amp with recessed mids, and a speaker with recessed mids....doesn't sound like a good combination.
As for the Z-Best....I think creambacks would excel even more in closed back cabs. (and the Z-best is not a closed back, it's vented. A LOT more bass response.

I have a potential buyer for my Ray...but if it doesn't go thru, I will buy some Creambacks to try in it.

Revrand and John,
Thanks for the good info. I currently have Classic Greenbacks in my Z-Best and like the sound quite a bit, but have been curious how this cabinet would sound if I replaced the Greenbacks with Creambacks.

I think it would sound pretty close to the same. The only reason to switch is if you're going to be using an amp greater than 50 watts.
