I picked up a couple of Siemens EF86 preamp tubes expecting them to be better than the Winged C that was in my Rx ES. They arent. Are the Winged C NOS tubes? I was suprised.
I did put a NOS GE 12ax7 in place of the JJ that was in there. (V1 or V2?) I did like that improvment. Took away a bit of "chime" but smoothed things out and gave it, IMHO, a better all around tone. OD pedals sound a bit thicker now.

It's amazing how much a tube swap (even one tube) affects the tone. I've had some amps where I honestly can't tell the difference in a cheap Sovtek preamp tube and a high dollar NOS...... Dr. Z's are really affected.
I've experienced this with the Stangray and the EF86. The stock tube usually sounds the best, not sure what I'll do when it's time to replace the EF86? Pray I luck into a good one, I guess?

Sorry it took so long...
I put a Hammond (made in Great Britain) EF86 in mine. Also a Sylvania 12AX7. The amp came with a quartet of Philips EL84s in addition to the normally installed EL84s.
The amp sounds great - I mean great - but I don't have "stock" as a point of reference.

I tried a new NOS Tesla but put the Dario Miniwatt back in. The Tesla had a lot more drive in the overdose mode, but I preferred the sound of the Dario. Keeping the Tesla as a backup.
