Just wondering if anyone has experimented with 15" speakers and what brands were used.

Apparently nobody uses 15" speakers with their Z amps. I've heard good things about the Eminence Big Ben. Everyone seems to like the old 15" Jensens, I don't know how the repro Jensen 15s sound. I've got a JBL D130 in a 1950 Fender Pro and it sounds good. I've got a couple of other D130s, one in an Ampeg flip top and one in a separate cab, but I've never tried them with a Z. I wouldn't think they'd be too good with pedals. That aluminum dome might make a distotion pedal sound trashy. Gerald Weber has written good things about the old square magnet CTS 15s, like what came in Kustoms.

This past week, I got to have first-hand experience with a Z & 15" while doing some shows in Atlanta...
Don Dunlvey, who's a luthier in Atlanta and built the Strat & Tele I use, has a MAZ 38 head and a 1"15 cabinet with a Weber California.
I wasn't sure it was a good match until I heard it. damn! The 38 is already a big-sounding amp, but the 15" Weber really made for a powerful combination. The clarity was there from the California, of course, but I was amazed at how thick-sounding it was, especially on the upper register strings.
I don't think you could go wrong with a 15" in any of Z's amps... I'm sure the Emi Big Ben or Weber 15F150 or A150 would match up well also..

I am interested in the 15's as well....anyone try or hear about the new Eminence Commonwealth 15" speaker? It is an alternative to a JBL and is suppose to be "Warm and rich, but also very clean and well defined. Great presence! Very full and smooth. Very little cone break-up, but like Overdrive."

Hey Jason, Your uncle Donald is building me my second neck. He is a master builder but he's also a wealth of knowledge, funny dude and killer player. I use a 15" 50 watt Weber f150 in a Trutone cab. Run blackface tremlolux through it and love it. My Rxes sound cool too bit its a combo so I havn't been able to try it live. It tames the volume a bit too.

I use a 15" Mesa cab sometimes with my Maz18. Sounds BIG. I just need to replace the EV thats in it Because it has a little harshness to it. Been wanting to try a Legend 151.

I used JBL K130s in the 70s. I went big because I wanted to use the same cabinet for Rhodes and steel if needed. The sound was somewhat surf, almost hi-fi but I liked the broad range and clarity I got with Strats. The speakers never broke up or contributed to the tone in that way. It was all amp. They took a lot of abuse and never quit.

I tried my Ghia the other day with an old EV 15. Sounded good but I would still prefer a 12.

I just bought a cab with a 15" eminence big ben for my marzerati. I tried 2x10s which sounded far too bright for me, and a few 1x12s and 2x12s which varied. I fell in love with the sound of this because it's just so huge and meaty. It's the sort of volume that makes your trousers flap, rather than hurting your ears - exactly the sound I was looking for. I'm a bit worried it might be a bit too big in the band, but the tone control should sort that out nicely if so.
