Hi all, Second thread in one day, I promise I won't do it again... I am totally new at tube amps and it happens that I am also (during the day- a History teacher- 8th grade Middle School students). Here is the thing: Starting from a tube amp made in Russia (lots of my students are into guitar music), I'd like to talk about the (recent) history of that country. But why is it that Russia is now "famous" for its tube production? I understand China and cheap labour costs. Is it that Russia, when USSR, had a tradition of making reliable tubes (for the military machine of the time)? Is there any NOS USSR tubes? Thanks! PS: I need all the help I can get to get my students interested in History

Others will know more about this than me. There are new old stock USSR/Russian tubes. Dr Z uses some of them for power tubes in amps like the ZWreck and I think the M12. The reason production of tubes is in Russia isn't necessarily the quality. Once all tube production in the US and Great Britain and a few other countries shut down they were still making them in China and the USSR. Finally they also shut down most production but a few outside companies Sovtec/Electro Harmonix for one bought into those companies since the tooling was still there and started up production of tubes for the guitar amp market. There have been several guitar amps made in the USSR/Russia that were imported into the US. Sovtec was one, it was a Mig 50 if I remember correctly and then there was a line with red in the name but I forget the rest of it. As a retired professor of Psychology I know what it is like to get people interested. I can't imagine doing it with 8th graders. Middle school has way too many hormones kicking in and out of control. Good luck.

Well, thanks again Big Kahuna. This is a start. Maybe extra credits? Never knew about those Russian amps coming over here. I did a quick search and the second brand is Red Bear. They just look mean... with a metallic grill for valance! Here is a link with picture of the monster... imported by Gibson! www.chambonino.com/work/miscguitar/misc21.html
