Hi all, I found lost of very useful infos on this forum about V1,, phase inverters, rectifiers. But what are the roles of V2 in "making" the sound? Does it have to be the same type of tube than in V1? Do they have to be matched and so on. I have a Maz18nr which I really appreciate. And by the way, thanks to the members of this forum for their knowledge and "savoir vivire"! Gene

In the Maz V2 is the tone stack driver. Changing it will have some effect on the tone of the amp but not as much as V1. It is the same type of tube, 12AX7, as V1. No need to worry about matching for that tube.

I use a Tungsol 12AX7 in V2 of my Maz18. Sounds great. It has balanced triodes , which is not necessary , but that's what I had laying around and it couldn't hurt anything.

Yes, those are the ones that came stock (18nr head, manufactured 9/12 says the back) in V1,2 and PI.

I still use a NOS American 12AX7 in V2. Not only do I like the sound better but I will probably never have to replace it. The longevity more than offsets the higher cost. It doesn't need to be as low-noise as the tube in V1. I sometimes substitute a 5751 if I want a little less gain.
