I see most cabinets are built out of pine or birch plywood. Is there any tone difference between these cabinets?

I see most cabinets are built out of pine or birch plywood. Is there any tone difference between these cabinets? In general, pine is lighter and more resonant and that resonance will add to the overall tone/synergy of the speaker/cab combination. Pine cabs are often described as warmer & looser sounding. There is also an argument that pine sounds better as it ages. Pine isn't recommended for high wattage amps. Birch ply wood is generally tighter and brighter sounding and can be used with high wattage amps. Because of it's laminations, it is more stable, stronger and heavier than pine. I've never been able to do any side-by-side comparisons and am simply quoting things I've heard or read from other players.

Thanks for the info. I just read an article that said in a open back cab, the wood type would not have any affect on tone.

I ran across a site www.earcandycabs.com that has a section regarding different tonal qualities of various woods. The tabs are : click custom cabs , click wood. This helped educate me. Luke

Luke I really like these cabs... I own two of them: a buzzbomb (2x12 closed-back, front ported), and a boa (2x12 open back). Tim Paulsen (owner of earcandy) is a great guy, and knows his stuff.
