Hi!
I have a Mesa 3/4 back cab that I tried last night with my Ghia. I have used it with my Rx before, and it was okay. With the Ghia it sounded pretty bad. The speaker is one of those 90 watt Black Shadows. I always thought it was a pretty good speaker, not great, but clear without too much coloration.
When I used the Ghia last night, I did a few things different - different guitar (strat) and different settings (volume all the way up). There seemed to be a really nasty high-end on it. So, I plugged into the nearest other cabinet, a 4x12 Mesa cabinet loaded with V30s. Huge difference, obviously. Down side: that cabinet is NEVER moving from its location. So, what I would like is to get a better speaker for the 1x12 cabinet. Something full sounding, with some sensitivity, that would also sound good with the Rx. I have been reading good things about the Tonkers. Maybe even a standard Eminence Legend 12 would be an improvement.
Just trolling for ideas - it has been forever since I have been speaker shopping, and it seems like right now is a "golden era" for speakers.
Thanks! -Phil

I have the same Mesa cab, and the same question! I use it with my 6545 when the Z-Best is simply too big. It's nice having a 90W speaker in a small package like this, but yes, the tonality is just kind of "there" for me - it works, but I now know there's better out there.
I just put a Weber AlNiCo 8" 15W into my 64-65 Vibrochamp, and it so far it sounds very promising. I don't seem to be seeing much reference to Weber lately, does anybody have any new experiences there? Terry

I had one of those cabs and I tried a Blue Dog in it and sounded a little different, but it seems like that cab doesn't show differences in speakers as much as some other cabs.

If you like the Ghia into Vintage 30s, why not get anothe Vintage 30? To me, that is THE single speaker to run a Ghia through if you're talking about a 1x12 cab.

+1, Stick a V-30 in there, give it a chanch to break in/loosen up, you'll dig it.
A bunch of people really like the Tonker, especially with a Ghia and I'll get around to tryin' one myself..BUT Tonker is a 150Watt speaker and is touted for it's Real clean Spank.....
Happy Hunting.

Thanks for the info. I am thinking about the V30. I am not sure if it is that the V30 is so much better, or if the 4x12 cab just rocked, or both, or that the amp just hated the Mesa speaker so much. I have an Avatar 2x12 cab with the Eminence GB12s in it - haven't used that in a while so it should be fun.
I also remembered a Legend 125 I had out in the garage, new in the box. Can't remember what I bought it for, though. I'll stick that in the Mesa cab first; a bird in the hand, so to speak.
Terryg: you're right - I haven't heard much about Weber lately.
tele62: I am in Houston, too. Where do you play / who with?
See ya! -Phil
