...what would it be?
OK, looks like I'm going for a Maz38 Sr. with reverb. After pondering the relative merits of combo vs. head & cab, 1x12 vs. 2x10, I'm settling in on a head plus a 1x12 cabinet. Right now I can't spring for both the head and a Dr. Z cabinet, but I do have a good quality open back cabinet that'll fit the bill for now. All it needs is an appropriate speaker.
Been reading the posts on this forum, looks like recommendations from Eminence, Celestion, and Weber abound. Seems like the trend is toward British-voiced speakers, presumably to take advantage of the 38's roots. Interested in hearing what you might recommend if you had to choose one speaker to go with a Maz 38 head.
For the record, the guys and I are doing classic rock, blues, Motown, R&B and the like. Our set list includes Beatles, Stones, SRV, Eric, BB, CCR, Byrds, Temptations, Black Crowes, etc., the kind of tunes and tones us geezers cut our musical teeth on. I like chimey clean, but also something that'll speak with authority on solos and crunchy rhythms.
Thanks!

I really like my Tone Tubby alnico. Really a sweet full sounding speaker. I'm so happy with it that I don't mind what it cost. If I ever sell my Maz 38 I'll put the Celestion back in. I'm keeping the TT!

Thanks, guys.
Anyone have experience with Chicago-era Jensen-style speakers? My 50-year-old Gibson GA-40 takes very well to both a Weber 12F150 and 12F150A, which are based on the late 50's C12N. Wondering how they might fit with the Sr....

My experience with the Maz 38 is limited to about 4 hours (granted, it was at gig volumes so I've got a really good idea of what that amp does), but the G12H30 would be my pick for a versatile speaker with a voicing that compliments that amp. I believe that's also what Z usually provides with that amp in the 1x12 combos.
Overall though, that's a pretty tough question, as all the artists you mentioned us a very wide variety of different speakers. The G12H30 is one of the more neutral sounding and versatile Celestions, but it still has the great Celestion/British voicing that I personally prefer.

I love my my Tone Tubby Alnico as well. That being said I wish I had the H1E for a little more high end(they didn't offer this when I bought mine). I've had the H1 for a few years and it sounds great with my MAZ18nr.

I have the TT H1E alnico. It's got a lot of top end but it's not shrill. This speaker really gives back whatever you put in. It doesn't sound like it's adding anything. Just smooth and sweet. The old cone might actually be better so you can open up the treble and cut knobs. I have mine almost off. I'd sure like to hear a Tonker. Bluzsteel raves about his, it must be good. But overall I couldn't be happier with my Tone Tubby.

Yeah, Bluzsteel got me wondering as well. Maybe after Christmas. And they're a pretty reasonable price , especially compared to a new TT
