My band had to cancel a gig recently and so we were able to get Frankie Starr to take the gig. My drummer and I went to the gig and I went up and played a couple of songs with Frankie and the band.
First, Frankie sounded great that night through his EZG-50, but I was blown away at how my Strat sounded through his MAZ 38. I've had MAZ 38's before but none sounded as rich and full as this one. The only hing I could come up with was the speaker. He's using a cab with an Eminence Red Coat "Big Ben" 15inch speaker. I've heard that speaker described as dark, but dang if it didn't allow that MAZ to sound giant and never thin or harsh. Great chime by opening up the cut and treble, but not hard/harsh highs!
Anyhow....Single 15" Big Ben was by far my most satisfying experience with the MAZ 38!

Bobbyray, that sounds really interesting! To be honest I am struggling to find reasons to hang on to my Maz 38. To my ears it's always seemed to lack character and personality! But people like BW and Frankie get a great sound. I've wanted to experiment with a celestion gold in a 1 x 12 cab but that would be an expensive experiment if it didn't work out and I simply can't afford to throw money at it!
Would you say the sound you heard would be suitable for use in a function band playing everything from pop through to jazz Bobbyray?

To be honest, we both play with the amp up pretty loud so it gets some dirt on it's own, then spice it up more with pedals in my case a Fulldrive II. Pop to Jazz? Pop would definitely work, Jazz with the way I was using the amp it would lack the headroom that I typically associate with jazz tones. It definitely was thicker than I remember previous MAZ amps with either a single 12 or the 2 x10 versions. The one 15 was huge! darker but retained definition.

Yea Bobby ! You were rocking it Bro. Good time ! That 38 also has a SS rectifier.....I have not played a Z amp that does not sound great with the Big Ben. This clip was during the honeymoon haha.. I almost always use the tone bypass ON BTW You went the other route! And it was a great sound!

I wouldn't have guessed that because it felt good under the fingers, not stiff at all! Well the thing that has happened is that I'm lloking for another MAZ 38 and a single 15 cabinet for a Big Ben. I absolutely loved the feel and tone of that rig!

I've also been looking for a 1x15 cab - not too common out there but they sound really big with right speaker. Let,me know if you find one you like out there!
