I've had GAS for this amp for more than 2 years, finally the stars aligned for me financially and I just placed the order with Humbucker Music. I went with the Stang Ray 1x12 combo with the alnico gold. They said it will go out today and I should have it by this Thursday! ;D I do want some advice on breaking in the speaker, so any info would be great thanks.

Congratulations and Welcome to the Forum. The Stang Ray is a very special amp. And the Gold is a great speaker with the Ray.
cheers/tom

I have a Ray head and a 1x12 Gold cab. Great combination and congratulations. I no longer get to play out much so I used the "run various loops through it for 5 days straight" approach to breaking it in. However you do it, the breakin makes a huge difference with this speaker and it took longer than I would have thought so don't judge it too soon.

Thanks for the info, and the warm welcome. I'll be putting the time in on this amp as soon as I get out of the box. I play country, southern rock, and blues so this will hopefully put an end to the tone chasing GAS I've had for years. Does anyone use the FX loop or do you run straight in the front. I have some OD and distortion pedals and a compressor to go in front, and I have an old boss gt3 I use for mod fx, delay, chorus, etc. Anyway sorry to ramble. I'll post some pictures and maybe a video or two when I get it hammered out.

John, welcome to the forum and congrats on the stangray.
It will be a great amp for you. Spend some time with your pedals. It took me a little bit to get used to how everything works with the ray, of course, it was my first ef86 amp. Don't hesitate to twist knobs, even to seemingly odd settings, there are lots of great tones to be found.

Congrats man!
The way I break in all my speakers.... I take my iPod, have a bunch of different styles of music on it (or put a radio on the stating the teenagers like), then run it into my PA head and then connect the speaker to the PA head and play it at about stage volume level...... every day for about 2 weeks while I'm at work. Gets a good 60-80 hours of break in time (plus the time I actually play it).

Well I got my new Stangray today, and I'm in love... My tone quest is finally over. So far it loves every pedal I have. The only thing is it has a real bite to it, so I've been using the cut to tame it. I think the bite is because the speaker is new. I've been reading post here for months, and there is a ton of great info here.
Anyway thanks to everyone here!
Oh yeah, my friend came over to check it out... It blew his mind! I have officially turned a fender guy into a Z man!

There are a lot of great amps out there..... But the Ray is one of the best and has a tone and feel all it's own. Sure, it's based off an AC30..... But it's got some extra mojo happening with it.
Congrats again!

I have officially turned a fender guy into a Z man! The ray can be very bright and chimey if you want it to be. In a small club you can get it too bright. Twist the knobs and let the speaker break in, the tones will only get better once that gold has a few hours on it. I always liked to start with the tone at 11:00ish and the volume set to need. Then I dial in just enough cut to where you just start to hear that top end jangle. That has always worked well for me. I've even found some nice tones with the cut turned off . I like running the cut very low when I'm using an overdrive pedal, it makes for a very rich sound without too much bite on the top end. Glad you are enjoying it.

Yeah. That's a great cosmetic package. Don't know if I've seen a Ray done up that way before.

The Gold needs to be broke in , thats expected, Also the LO Input does Wonders for taming the Ray , I sometimes use my Radial ABY and use the Hi/LO inputs for Rhythm and Lead Boost , The Ray Hands Down will do clean stuff as well as Get Raunchy Rock tones too, Congrats! BEAUTIFUL AMP
