I've got a 38NR head and a Zbest right now. Love the sound, but this thing is LOUD, and that cab is HEAVY. When I play it at home, EVERYONE can hear it all over the neighborhood, much less in my house..... when I take it out, I curse and complain about lugging this refrigerator around with me.
Previously I've had the Zbest and the 410 at the same time, preferred the sound of the Zbest given that one had to stay, one had to go, and I preferred the sound of the zbest overdriven to the 410......
Anyway, I'm toying with the idea of dropping the zbest and going for a 112 cab.
Am I crazy? I'm worried about losing some of the thickness to the sound, I've never just used a 112 and have this mental presupposition that it's going to sound weak and boxy.
If I go for a 112, is a Celestion gold actually worth the price?
Please discuss amongst yourselves.

I've never used anything but a 1x12. I would imagine you will lose a little something (mostly the aching back).

I'm using a Greenback right now. Helped cut the volume and smooth out the tone vs the Z-Best. You'll probably go thru a few speakers but starting with a good cab is key.

When I first tried a Maz, I preferred the Z Best over everything else, and the 1x12 and 2x10 didn't cut it in comparison. However, with practicality in mind, I ended up with both of the smaller cabs, and the 1x12 is the one I gig with. Mine had a V30 for a long time, and with the back closed, and once the speaker had broken in, it sounded good to me. I recently changed to a Celestion Gold, however, and while it's not perfect it is a very good speaker. I find it has more bass, though not as tight as the V30, is more chimey, (though arguably too much so), and the guys in my band prefer it, simply describing it as better quality. Is it worth the money? For me yes, but if you can try one first so much the better. Mine improved with use, and while it sounded a bit too grainy at first, and a bit harsh when using an OD pedal, that seems to have smoothed out now. It sounds bigger than the V30, and coming from a Z Best would probably suit you well. Search around here and you'll find that most of the guys love it. I'm sticking with mine for the time being, though I probably ultimately still prefer ceramic speakers, and my Z 2x10 also sounds excellent with the Maz. It's a personal choice I guess.

Mother of god those are some expensive 112 cabs.
Looks like I'll need to swing the table saw back out in the garage and build my own.

I have a Gold in a 1x12 Mesa open back that sounds great with the 38. I also have used some of the el cheapo Fender Roc Pro 1x12 cabs with the 38, with Red Fangs, TT reds, and Texas Heats, and they sound fine. The Roc Pros go for about $100.00 all the time on CL and you can get about $20.00 back if you sell the verschitze speaker that comes in it...
