Alright guys, new amp on the horizon and I'm trying to research as much as possible as there's very little chance of a "try before I buy" due to where I live.
Ok, I'm a home and small - medium sized club player.
I play all the classic rock, blues based rock and blues stuff.
A typical set will include some Clapton, some SRV, some Hendrix, some Aerosmith, a little Gary Moore, maybe a bit of Zepplin, some Bonamassa, Allman Brothers, Free, John Mayer, the three kings etc...
Therefore, the amp needs to be versatile. It will be my only amp for the foreseeable future, however I will run a multi-amp set up when funds become available so if it happens to do one thing better than another, so be it.
Tone wise I'm looking for a Gary Moore - Parisian Walkways as a lead tone, Brad Whitford - Same Old Song And Dance as a crunch rhythm, needs to clean up nicely to a Hendrix – Little Wing level.
28-50W Good master volume, or Power Scaling (preferable)
So what I'm looking at is the Route 66 or the Maz 38. Any other suggestions or ideas guys?

I've been a player for 55 yrs and a music store mgr. since the 70's, so I have played on and owned almost all of the major brands. I just bought a Maz38 and feel its one of the best sounding and best built amps I've owned so far. Plus I paid full price for it! That was a first. I play for a country artist now but play any style that is needed. If you want to cut through the mix then a "Z" is the amp for you.

I've played nearly all Dr. Z models along with numerous other "boutique" amps, and my MAZ 38 NR is by far the most versatile with all kinds of guitars. I'm sure the Reverb model is great too...I wouldn't hesitate to try one of those either.
The Route 66 is a killer amp, but I didn't at all think of it as versatile (for various guitars + genres). The MAZ 38 can do just about everything very well. It can be clean...it can drive....it can hit all kind of sweet spots that most amps only dream about.
If I could go back to four years ago, then I'd have ordered a MAZ 38 and been done with all of the searching.

Hey TRock, That's one of the few (also KT45, M12) that I haven't owned/played. I'd probably love channel 1 on it. I'm not sure it'd be more versatile than the MAZ, but if I were looking for a Z w/ 6L6's that's versatile, then I'd grab a Galaxie over the EZG50 I bet. I owned the EZG, and it sounded great but didn't suit my playing style quite as well. I like more bite. PS - If you wanna send yours over, then I'd be happy to confirm your thoughts!

The MAZ 38 (especially the NR version) is one of the all time most toneful amps in my opinion. It takes the already fantastic sounding MAZ Jr sound to a new level of thickness with it's four power tubes. With my T-Rex Room Mate in front of the amp (not in the effects loop) into a 2X12 Dr. Z cab, I'd put it up against any Twin Reverb on the planet and my money's on the MAZ. It's got fantastic clean tones and a very smooth, unique overdrive. You almost can't tell when it starts overdriving it's so smooth. There are different kinds of distortion (harmonic, intermodulation, crossover, phase, etc.) and Z has this amp tuned for the most pleasing distortion without the nasty side effects.
You can hear this amp in the hands of Buddy Whittington on his solo albums. Buddy has an early MAZ 38 that has turned many people onto Z worldwide. Doc once said that wherever Buddy goes he gets a call the next day: "How can I get one of those amps that Buddy had?"
Also, I can't confirm this, but Brad Paisley's "Make a Mistake With Me" (the intro solo chord melody part) sounds EXACTLY like my 38. If you want to hear what the clean tone sounds like check that out. It might be another Z on that track (or multiple Z's) as Brad is not known as a MAZ 38 guy, but he does use a lot of different stuff in the studio.

I listened to "Make a Mistake With Me" and I agree. If that's a Z, then I'd bet a dollar to a donut that it's a MAZ SR/38.
