Hey all, I'm considering changing the HFS and Vintage Bass pups on my PRS CE22. I like the guitar, the shape, playability, neck, etc. I find though that this guitar is brighter than I had wanted. I have a 50th Ann American Deluxe Strat. The Strat (with the scn pups and the S1 switch) gives me a great variety of classic Strat tones and some with a little more balls than the standard Strat.
When I got the PRS, I was hoping for darker, higher strenght pups. It turned out that the "brightness" levels of the PRS and Strat are in the same neighborhood.
Does anyone have any suggestion for a pairing of humbuckers that would give me higher pickup output, a slightly darker ("woodier"?) tone palette. More to the Les Paul tone territory.
It will be a simple replacement: I'll eliminate the PRS 5-way switch for a basic 3-way toggle.
I'd appreciate any thoughts, experiences, etc! I am willing to spend some decent cash on these, so I really won't have the opportunity to experiment. I would like to be able to make an informed decision and pay whatever needed.
Thanks folks for the help!

Thanks Rick. I read the description and they sure sound like the ticket. I was thinking Lollars or Fralins, but haven't had any experience with them. I think I'll find a set and give them a try.
Hotter, more sustain, while still keeping the airiness and definition of the PRS--sounds like a winner. I'll write a review when I get them.
I appreciate your help!

I suggest you look closely at WCR Darkbursts ... www.wcrguitar.com/darkburst.html... or even Fillmores ... www.wcrguitar.com/fillmore.htmlThese might fit your needs very well. Wagner makes great pickups. His Crossroads are great vintage PAFs. The Darkbursts are slightly overwound Crossroads, and the Fillmores are considerably more overwound.

I'm not current on all the pickup boo-teek guys out there. But for me, a Duncan Alnico 2 Pro or Seth Lover will do it every time. Just really sweet sounds.
sorry I can't help you more with clips or somesuch.

I'm gonna go with the non-booteek trend here and suggest giving some thought to DiMarzios ... maybe a PAF Pro or something in that range.... just my .02, ymmv, etc. etc etc. .......

I had a CE22 Maple top that was very bright. There weren't the boutique pickups around then that there are today, but Duncan '59 and Seth Lovers were way too thin and bright. The HFS are higher output pickups which probably won't be as bright or thin as the PAF clones others have suggested. PAF and clones are pretty bright and thin compared to high gain pups. My CE22 had an original Dragon I in the bridge and it was still bright and atriculate, but very fat in the mids. When I put that pickup in a Les Paul, it sounded like mud, but the same Les Paul with Fralin mid-8K pickups sounded perfect to me.
I would recommend getting a Dragon I or Duncan Custom Custom. Both of those pickups have lots of mids, more output and good but warmer highs.
