I just pulled the trigger on some new tubes for my Maz 38 NR head.
Here is what I currently have in it: V1, V2 - NOS JAN GE 7025's (ultra low noise 12AX7's) V3 - NOS JAN GE 5751 V4-V7 - Electro-Harmonix EL84's
Just purchased the following: V1 - NOS Sylvania Gold Brand 5751 (Gold Pins, Gray Plates) V4-V7 - Preferred Series 7189 (Premium EL84) with highest possible tube rating for maximum headroom
I basically run my amp as a clean pedal platform. I was just getting too much gain from the front end of the amp as well as too much power tube distortion and wanted to clean it up a bit.
Anyone have any thoughts on the tubes themselves or subject in general?

I just picked up a 2009 MAZ 38 and suspected that the notes were choking out just a bit (loss of sustain). I too replaced the V1 and Power tubes and definite improvement. Figuring all the tubes were shot, I then purchased the rest of the bunch (current Z-specs) and WOW...what an amazing difference. It's now such a dynamic and lively, "alive" amp...I'm in love with the thing. I sold my Mesa Road King II combo which had every bell and whistle known to man within it...it's funny how much happier I am with a single channel Maz and the same pedals I've always used...but with a genuinely good tone.
Great to join the board too! Learning a lot from it.

I just purchased a used Maz 38 NR 2x10 combo and I'm loving it but have no idea how old the tubes are. I want to get a new rectifier and a set of output tubes but am feeling stuck. I've always been a fan of JJs but I keep reading that they have become unreliable. Everything else that seems sturdy is described as sounding darker or muddy.
What's a good choice for an output tube that will be reliable but retain the current sparkle of the the amp.

I had some bad luck with the Preferred Series 7189, the first set made my amp cut in and out, the replacement set crapped out at a show. Both times I replaced it with the stock Electro-Harmonix power tubes that the Dr uses and it worked fine. I've since gone back to those EH tubes. I would go with those if you ask my personal opinion. Good luck!

The Electro Harmonix 84s might be a new development for more recent amps. I've never had a JJ 84 fail.

Still using JJ's in my Maz 38, just get them from a genuinely reputable dealer. I use Hot Rox here in the UK, with no problems yet. I change them regularly though.
I'd be interested to know how those EH EL84's compare tonally.
