Just picked up a used Mini Z (had one a few years ago too).
Has anyone squeezed a 10" speaker in there before?

the mini Z and the fender champ suffer with an 8 inch speaker. I've just not heard a good one. Bothe are way better amps with a 10 or 12.

I was watching the Joe Walsh interview/concert from Guitar Center during which Joe says that the "sound" from Funk 49 was due in large part to the 8" speaker in his Fender. YMMV obviously!

I got the amp last night. It's really pretty amazing with just the 8. I compared it to my SF Fender champ which is also an 8 and it has some magic going on. The Champ on the other hand has some other magic that I can't put my finger on. It's not as articulate, but it has a mid presence that sounds fantastic. The Z however spanks the champ badly in the low end and the sparkly high end ...... that and the Z stays focused no matter where the volume knob is pointed! Now I'm curious about the newer 10" version. Before I got this amp I was thinking, an attenuator for a 5W amp?? C-mon now, that's crazy! Now I can see why the good Doctor did it!

Diggin up this old thread... still wondering if anyone's tried - successful or not?
I'm on the hunt and would prefer a head unit, but thee seem to be more combos (especially 8's) out there at reasonable prices. I can't seem to find spec's on the old one to see if it's the same size cab.
Also - Does this chassis fit the Ghia/Z28/etc cab size?

Seriously? No one has tried this?
Ok... another question... does anyone know if the old cab is the same dimensions as the new 1x10 combo cab? Or, what they used to be for the 8"?

I'll compare cab sizes later this evening...I have an original mini as well as a CG 10" combo...I'd venture to say the 10" combo is slightly larger but that's just a guess

I'm almost positive that a 10" speaker will not fit in the old 8" cabinet. I have not seen one but remember reading somewhere that it's too tight.
The new chassis is definitely bigger than the old one. The new Mini Z chassis is the same size as the Ghia, Z-28, Monza, and M12. The Mini Z combo cabinet is also the same exact size as the standalone Z 1x10 cab (which can actually be converted to accept a chassis of any of the aforementioned amps.

I have an empty head cab and a 1x10 ghia... sounds like the old chassis won't give me the option to use them and have that kind of flexibility, which is what I was hoping for.

I saw that one too. I never had an issue with the 8" speaker. With a really good mic, that amps sounds huge when it's recorded.

Lately I've been using an with the Mini with the stock Weber 8" speaker. Just retubed it with Tung-sol's and with the volume on the amp up about 3/4, getting some really excellent tones !!
