Thought I’d give my Casino some loving today and clean up all the pots…they’ve been getting a little finicky lately. Was my first time working on a hollow body and wasn’t particularly looking forward to the prospects. Needless to say, spent the afternoon working on the guitar and I can’t get a any sound out of it all...Like nothing...not a hum or a fiss...nothing.
Got the pots out and cleaned without too much difficulty, even got them back in reasonably well. But when I plugged her in for the big test there was nothing, nothing at all. Switched back and forth between pickup, nothing; tried my other guitar through the same gear and it worked fine. Ended up taking it apart a number of times and always with the same result
It’s a bit of a chore accessing the hardware and as a result I had to solder several wires (the wires were very small and brittle. some were attached only by a strand or two). Even had the meter out (you know I’m stumped when the meter comes out). Needless to say I’m not feeling too good about this and am considering taking her to the shop for some professional love.
Anybody got and ideas why a guitar would be stone cold dead?

If you're not even getting any hum or noise from the amp, I'd say the guitar's output is shorted to ground somewhere. Either you miswired it, or more likely, somehow in the re-install a wire got pinched or is touching something it shouldn't. That'd be where I'd check. Stick an unwired plug into the guitar jack and put the ohm meter across it. If it's 0 ohms, you'll know that's what's happened. It should be more than 0 ohms if the volume pots are up. In fact it should read just about what the volume pot value is.

Thanks Steve, I don't think i miss wired it, but i did try metering the input jack like you suggested and there's definitely something wrong. Not the best with a meter so i tried my tele first...got 7.8 ohms at the jack. Then tried the casino and got nothing ... i don't mean zero either... there was no change in the meter when i put the leads on the Jack.

IT'S A..L..I..V..EThanks again Steve, I had given up (been at it too long). You gave me the gumption to try it again. All and all it was a lot of work just to clean some pots (they're quiet as a mouse now though ) But on the bright side, I learned a lot about this guitar; not the least of which is ya got to treat it like a lady...You know...Gentle like. ;D

Glad it worked out. After doing tech work back in the '70's, I began to realize that 99% of all the problems I had to fix were mechanical in nature - almost never electronic problems. So I always look for loose stuff, bent stuff, things that came apart, or weren't plugged in. That usually weeds out the mechanical stuff pretty fast.
