I tried one back in 2002 or '03. In fact the friend who introduced me to Z amps sold it to me, though he encouraged me not to buy it. He originally picked it up at the Arlington show for someone else, but that guy ended up wanting more of a traditional Strat.
I had read great things about the Comanche and thought it might be the thing I was looking for. It was still close to mint, so at his amazing price I was not going to be out any money in trying it.
He was right. It felt okay - looked incredible, but there was no "wow" factor in the tone for me. It went to Ebay and I made $150 or $200.

Check out some Will Ray video's or recordings...he has those pickups on a an ASAT so maybe that can give you an idea short of getting out there and trying them yourself.

Thanks I will. I do not have a G& L dealer here in Abq so I will. the one I played was at Eddies Guitars in St Louis but I did not take the time to plug it in. But the neck on the thing was amazing to me.

I have a hollow body asat Z3 that has the same wiring/pickups as the commanche. Having owned this one i have been looking for a commanche myself. Solidbody strat would sound different of course, but this is a nice guitar. Its my avatar. The pickups are pretty hot. I lowered mine a tad, but at the same settings as any of my guitars it is the loudest. Even louder than my buckers in the ES137. And O so quiet. They are as quiet as a mouse. But dont think strat. It doesnt get the strat quack on the 2 and 4 spots. The push pull pot brings the neck and bridge in whenever one or the other is on. Reduces it to 2 extra sounds, neckk/bridge and all three together. All three sounds pretty good too, as does the neck and bridge. No tele sounds at all. It does have a strat neck tone and i guess the mid is strattish but the bridge is bigger than any strat ive had. All in all a nice guitar withg usable tones, but not a strat. If i was gonna get another G&L i would have a hard look at a S 500. My legacy was a great guitar. The Alnicos were very sweet, and the G&L trem is the best. I had to lift my pickups a little to find the best output as they are not high. Hope that helps.

Yes I do and tons of tone but certainly not a typical Strat at all . The Z pickups have a P90 attitude to them....big and ballsy but no noise !!
