Has anyone replaced the MFD ceramic pickups in a G&L ASAT? What did you use? How did you like (or dislike) them compared to the stock ceramic MFD pickups? I do like the stock pickups in my asat but I would like to hear from people that have put in new pickups and what they think it was worth it.

I put in a seymour duncan hot rail and a vintage rhythm I'm not sold on it quite yet.. They are just a little bit too far apart I got them ajusted as much as they can be but there is still just a huge volume differance.

Are talking the ASAT Special with the P-90 type pups (larger block type pickups) or the ASAT Classic with the standard size pups?
No experience w/the former.
But, for the latter:
I have the Duncan Jerry Donahue in both ASAT Classics...amazing pup!
If you want something hum-canceling, the Duncan STK-T3b Vintage Tele Stack in the bridge and the Duncan STK-S4n Classic Stack Plus in the neck is a killer pairing.

I used to have a classic stack in the bridge...liked it for a while then took it out, then next time I tried to use it in a different I just couldnt bond with it...might have been the guitar's fault but anyway...

FYI- I've got a ASAT classic custom. The large soapbar from the ASAT special in the neck and Tele style bridge. I love the guitar but would like a little warmer more vintage sound. The MFD's sound good but compared to my strat with fralins, they sound a little cold. I just wondered if others with the classic setup have replaced the ceramic pu's with Alnico's and are happy with the change in sound.

I recall Rio Grande offering replacements for ASAT pu's. I haven't heard them, but being RG's - they must have some serious fatness to them.

I have heard mixed opinions on the Rio Grandes. However, I've found a pickup maker that comes highly recommended, very similiar to Fralins quality that makes an ASAT replacement. I ordered a pickup from him. Stay tuned for how it works out. He said the wait is around 4 weeks.

My son has an Asat Standard he loves, but is always thinking "new sound".

I love the build quality of my ASAT but find the ceramic MFD's just too "brittle" sounding compared to my strats' Fralins. Also I really don't like high output PU's since they cut off some of the bandwidth. I wish G&L would use Alnicos in these guitars, at least offer them as an option. It's really not a problem since I've replaced pickups on all my electrics with ones from small boutique makers and have always liked the results.
