I have a Steinberger Spirit that I upgraded with Lindy Fralin and DiMarzio pickups. If I go to trade it in at one of the superstores, will they give me any additional value for the upgrades? I am guessing they will go by some book value and not consider the upgrades. Should I swap the original pickups back in before I go to trade it? Any help is appreciated. RR

you'll ( usually ) never get a decent trade in value at most stores so prepare to be dissapointed or insulted . They will likely devalue it because of it not being original condition .
You would be far better off to sell privately .

OK, here's the deal. A music store will ,generally, give you HALF of what they think they can sell it for. So , if you want to sell your five year old Tele, and they think they can eventually sell it for $800, they'll offer you $400, a bit more if you push them (maybe $425). That's a pretty steep discount, but, hey, they have their expenses, too. Unless its a very collectible item, you are going to take a bath. The exception is, if your trading it in, then you get about 60%. You can always give up the guitar, and play chess, right?

PUt the stock pups back in and then sell the guitar AND pups seperately on eBay or Craigslist or...
You'll, as noted above, take a bath on trade-ins. Best financial option is an outright sale.

I think most guitar values are calculated using what I call the "Lunar Distance Method"...

A lot of them look at the guitar in that Orion Blue Book, then tell you "See looky here. The book says I can only get this much for it. Now we've got to make something so I can only offer you $xxx for trade in". In other words they'll hose you. Same as trading in a car or selling it to a dealer. I recently sold my Lexus. I went to CarMax and got an offer. They had a similar car but with twice the miles as mine listed for $21,900. They offered me $16K. I sold it myself for $19K. I also wanted to trade my Korg AC30 with blues in on my stang ray and cab. Mass street Music offered me $450 as a trade in! That hacked me off! Trading with stores never works out for me. That's one reason i have so much stuff. You could consign your guitar with a local store. As a rule upgrades hurt the value of a used guitar.

Your getting very good advice here. I would add only that if you are going to play the gear game you would be wise to learn the fine art of horse trading.

It is better to sell it out right and take the money and buy what you're after.
