Well, after selling my Maz Jr and cab I immediately started to doubt my ability to go Z-less for any length of time. I've owned 4 different Z's, but I've always wanted to try the Ghia, as it seems to be the quintessential "must have" Z that everyone always gushes about. So I ordered a 2x10 combo from Make'n Music and hopefully it'll show up by the end of next week. ;D ;D
My experience with all my Z's thus far has been that there's just no way to get a bad sound out of them, so I'm really looking forward to the simplicity of the CG tone stack, a true plug n' play amp...

I sold my Maz Jr. thinking I would just save the money and go amp-less for a while as I haven't gigged in a while and won't be any time soon. Well, after about a week my acoustic just wasn't cuttin' it and I was seriously jonesin' to be plugged in. Instead of getting another Maz I always wanted to try a Ghia and the Doc's 2x10 speakers, so I decided to get both in one nice little package! I love the Maz and I'm already missing it badly, but right now I can barely afford to have one amp.

The Ghia is something that has to be experienced, it is so much more than it looks ... only two knobs but watch out ..... I rotate my amps just cuz I can and it just amazes me how the Ghia can compete with the likes of my other Z's !

You will really like the tone of the ghia. It only takes a few seconds to find the sweet spot based on which guitar you are playing and you are not constantly wondering if it would sound better if you adjusted some other knob on the amp. The tone and simplicity is what makes it such a great amp.

It finally arrived!!!! ;D ;D WOW, I am in love with this amp! I'm so glad I sold my Maz, otherwise who knows when I would have had the opportunity to pull the trigger. The tone knob is amazing, from jangly, bright and chimey to thick, full and percussive. Simply amazing, I had no idea. The 2x10 speakers are another big surprise, they sound HUGE! Very wide, spread out and even, but VERY focused at the same time, much more than a 12" IMHO. It actually feels/sounds like a compact 2x12 setup, nice sonic spread but more focused. I can't beleive I wasted all that time with all those knobs on the Maz's! JK But seriously, I wouldn't have been prepared for the Ghia without playing the Maz's first and slowly working out of my comfort zone. The main reason I felt ready to try the Ghia was that the Maz's sounded great any way I set the tone stack, so I figured "Do I really need all those knobs anyway?" ;D Well, that's my first impression, I'm sure I'll be gushing about this amp for some time to come! ;D Greg

That little CG sure does mesmorize a guy.

Well, after a very short love affair I'm afraid I'm going to have to part with my Ghia. Its one of the funnest amps I've ever played, but I think I'm going to have to go back to the versatility of the Maz Jr. My main guitar is a Parker NiteFly and it's pretty biright sounding, and I just can't seem to smooth it out to my liking with the CG/2x10 pairing. The Maz's cut knob was perfect for taming the highs on this guitar. I was hoping the Beam Blockers would help, but they just evened out the highs instead of softening them (which is what they're supposed to do actually). If anyone is interested check out the Buy, Sell & Trade Page: drzamplifiers.proboards41.com/index.cgi?board=BST&action=display&thread=1192514206&page=1Thanks, Greg

I love my Ghia head w/2-10 custom cabinet (Weber BluePups). Most dynamic, touch responsive amp I've ever played through. It sounds as good with my DeTemple-ized Strat, as it does with my PRS SC250. (For reverb: Van Amps "Soulmate") It sings! My love affair with this amp is long-lived, and it's NOT for sale!

How about keeping the Ghia and buying an EQ pedal? Also - maybe those highs are the result of speakers that aren't quite broken in yet. Right now I'm breaking in a new G12H30 and at first there were some extra crispy highs that annoyed me to no end.

Yeah, I'd hate to give up this early, but I never had any real "break-in" issues with the Maz, it just kept sounding better and better. Don't get me wrong, I love this amp. It is a joy to play and the tones are amazing, but I'm not currently gigging and I'm not sure how long it will take to brake in these speakers at the modest levels I'm playing. Who knows, maybe it will grow on me soon enough... Greg

If my Ghia sounds a little bright in some rooms I just turn down the tone pot on the guitar a hair. So far it sounds best with my 1x12 EV cab.

Greg You can hook the speaker up to a CD player playing some music with a wide dynamic range (hip hop is good if you know someone with such a CD), turn it up and let 'er run for 48 hrs. or so. Bingo, broken in! That's how Dave at Avatar does it when he re-labels his Celestions as Hellatones-it works.

I've been meaning to do something along that line - but we're all going to have to clear the house or go insane. My son has a cab with fairly new speakers and his and mine are both 8 ohm. My plan is to hook them both up to a mixer and power amp and let the disc spin until all the crispy critters are gone.

How loud do you run it? Dave does it with a bunch of speakers hooked up in series with alligator clips, lets them play overnight. I actually think he lets them run either over the weekend or several nights with the CD set to repeat. As far as how loud, he said "pretty loud"-not too descriptive, but I would personally try to match up the wattage rating of the speaker to the amp/receiver and run it loud but not to the clipping level.

Okay. I just finished messing around recording some sound clips. I absolutely love the sound of this thing miced, and at any volume, doesn't matter it just sounds amazing. I think I'm gonna chill and spend some more time with the Ghia, I'm sure its just a matter of time. This amp is just so much damn fun, and I'm sure I can work around the highs with my playing dynamics and the tone pot on the guitar. Geez, I wear myself out sometimes... Greg

Greg Glad to hear you're giving it a grace period. Last night a buddy came by with some gear for me to sell for him and he brought along an old 1987 Asat that used to be mine. He plugged it into my Ghia and it was like they are made for each other. Why I sold that guitar is beyond me? (Oh yeah. Iwas getting into synth guitar back then - and I didn't even own that stuff anymore.) My new Celestion G12H30 I have bolted into an old monitor cab and hooked up to a low powered monitor amp which is of course connected to a mixer. I'm running a disc full of Carlton tunes, kind of 5 hours worth of blessing on the new speaker. On the other side of the amp I have my son's new 8 ohm Red Coat speaker, so I'm breaking in more than my own. So far I've let music run through the speakers 14 or 15 hours at a volume that gets them to move in and out. I think my power amp is only a 100 watts per side in stereo, more than enough to move the 30 watt G12. On Avatar's site it says they exercise the speaker for 15 hours - so I should be more than finished with mine later today.

Dont forget to try a 5751 in v1 Just ordered 2 NOS 5751's for v1 and v2 and a NOS Mazda 5Y3GB Rectifier (per Jason Gleatons recommendation) from Mike at KCA. Can't wait to try em out!

Well, I ultimately decided to sell the Ghia, but just before I did I had a chance to plug it into the JDesign 1x12 with the Hellatone 30 and I was stunned. The highs were tamed, the bottom end was improved and the tone was just all around warmer. Looks like I might be in the market for a Ghia head...

Well - at least ya' know what you like now. I'd almost work out a trade deal with my head and a cab, but I kind of like how I can use one speaker or two (even four on crazy days). Still wish I had the money right now for your 2x10. Best of luck getting what works for you.
