I've bought the winged C's off of ebay. They sound good and are still affordable. I'd call Doc first thing Monday, he may be able to help you out. If you need one quick, I could help you out. I have lots of them - winged c, tesla (nos, not JJ), nos tung-sol, and some different branded nos mullards. They all sound pretty good.

Dammit, I hate the current tubes..... If I was Doc Z, I'd be soooo pizzed.....How can you make a living selling tube amps when these new tubes create 98% of the problems? ?

@jessim02: Thanks for the offer, man! Tubes are actually warrantied for 90 days, so I'm ultimately covered there. This may be a good excuse to go for a TubeDepot Amperex EF86 in the meantime and get it shipped quickly!
@maddog: Yeah, I noticed the beginning of microphonics about a week or two after getting the M12 and then today, it started hissing and squealing a bit and then volume dropped way down to almost nothing. Now, the hissing and squealing are gone but the volume is still super low...just a little bleed through the circuit. I hope it's just the EF86!

Sorry to hear about the bad tube, Those tubes can be finicky I have lost a few in my Ray ;D I've liked the Teslas I've tried. I think mine are ef806 as well, which I believe is a slightly more rugged version of the ef86. I tried them for a bit, then put them back in the box to keep as spares. I tested them in the RX Jr, which uses the tube as V2 instead of V1 like the 'Ray and some others.

I think I have a bad one too. I've only had this amp (head) on twice since receiving it last Tuesday from Humbucker. When I have it up past noon, I get high pitch squeal when I hit a low note. I took the back off and tapped each of the tubes, the ef86 will make a metallic sound and will pop through the speaker,,none of the other tube will make a noise. I hope the tube is all that is wrong. I also tried another amp with the speaker cab, it's def the amp making the noise. Mine is #32, I really liked what I've heard so far. I had to let a zwreck go a few months ago, this is a welcome back to Z amps.

Yeah, if my failure is indeed the EF86, that's exactly how mine started to act up before it failed. I got progressively worse microphonics and hiss over the course of a couple weeks until one day it screeched like an eagle and made some other horrible noises and then it just stopped passing signal except for a little bleed-through.
Thanks, Z, for sending the EF86 replacement yesterday! Will report back on the results.

Hey Dave, what brand was/is the old and new EF86's? The stock tube was an AEL gray-plate EF86. Doc says they were only used on the earliest units (mine is #5) and they're now shipping everything with NOS Winged 'C'. It sounds so good, it's got me wondering about Amperex and others!

Ok, cool. I was curious. Mine is #3 but it actually has the winged c so I should be good. But it also came with the russian 7189 power tubes.

Hmmm....interesting...mine came with EH EL84s, but in the process of debugging the EF86 failure, I subbed in some Ruby tested JJs and they sounded so nice, I just left them in.

I have a DC-30 clone and the new prodution EF86's I tried would all squeel like a stuck pig when cranked, some even at quite low volumes, though I do admit I didn't try a =C=.
I finally tried an old Mullard, absolutely no problems, no squeal, nothing. I then went and stocked up, there are plenty about and not overly expensive, nothing like a Mullard ECC83 price.
