anyone replace pickups on strats w/s-switching does that switching system still work, or does it become inactive?
i want to replace w/fralins, lolars, voodoo, dimarzio area's or something in this group.
should i just replace all the electronics, pots wiring etc?
anyone have any experience with this?
thanks - tommy

no one here has an american deluxe strat with the cobalt noiseless pickups, with that little push button in the volume pot? ...and replaced them with some good pickups?

Tom,
I don't own one but I agree the stock PU's aren't very good. The ability to rewire them would depend on the conductors coming from the cobalt's, I have not seen a schematic but if there are multiple wires coming from each stock coil then vintage type replacements will not work (if each PU is 2 conductor like the vintages ones then your golden). The good news is you can replace the stock electronics for less than 40 bucks with better quality pots, jacks and switches, and the tone will be greatly improved with both swap outs. Good Luck!

I just said this on another thread, but this thread is more on point: Chris Kinman makes a Strat wiring system that allows you to retain the S-1 switching. But if I remember correctly he also has his own wiring setup that allows for (I believe) seven positions. Check out the Kinman website.

I have an American Deluxe Ash strat that I replaced the SCNs with Kinman Blues. Big improvement with the Kinmans and it retains the S1 switching but I don't use the switching since the tones are kind of muddy to my ears. Chris Kinman recommends the Traditional MkII set for the S1 switching.
For other pickups, I'm sure they will work but I would draw a diagram of the wiring before taking out the SCNs so you know where the new wires go. Chris K. has a diagram but you have to buy his pups to get it. I lost the diagram, I'm afraid, some time ago.
Good luck with it.

thanks everyone for the feedback.
i will consider all options. the kinmans might be one. i will check the website.
i may just pick the exact pickups i want, and replace the electronics with higher quality parts.
i have 2 of these guitars, eventually i will change both.
keep the ideas coming. thanks again- tommy
