I know there's been several discussions about Strat pickups, but here goes. I have a Strat that's too bright (for me, anyway). I'd like to swap the pups out of it and see if that will change the sound more to my liking. It's a parts-o-caster with an Alder body and Maple neck. Currently has Fralin sp43's. So, anyone have suggestions for warm sounding Strat pups (noiseless are OK)? Thx.

Ken, My Blue Strat I had at Z fest sports a set of GFS "64 Texas", they cost $64 with overnight shipping and I dig'em.
I used that guitar on 80% of the guitar parts on the record we just cut 'cause it sounded the best.
'Ol Blue was WAY bright stock and this set worked great for me, and an affordable gamble.

if you're willing to go with single sized 'buckers, I've been hearin' lots of good things about the new Dimarzio Area series otherwise, in a true single coil ... maybe somethin' with the Alnico II magnets .... happy shoppin', eh Joel

Bill Crook put some custom wound Voodoo 60 Strat pickups in my guitar, and they're the best Strat pickups I've ever heard, especially the bridge pickup. He had that one wound for a thicker tone. It's a little hotter than normal, but not a whole lot. What it does is give a great full tone with none of that ice pick high end. It's the only bridge pickup I've found on a Strat that works for me. Peter Florance at Voodoo can custom wind anything you want. I would recommend them in a heart beat.

Thanks, Curt, I recall playing your blue Strat, I used the neck pup and it sounded real nice. I even recall asking you about the pups, but later I didn't remember your answer. I'll have to check GFS's out, I'm not at all familiar with them, except for that one time I played your Strat. Can I hear some of these recordings you did on your MySpace page (which one, I see you have 2 listed)? Ken

It comes up when I use the DiMarzio pickup selector on their website and input the parameters I select/want. Please edumucate me on AlNiCo II pickup magnets -- do they give up a warmer sound than ceramics or other types? And thanks aj1169, I'll have to look into the Voodoo pups, I'm not at all familiar with them. Ken

Hey Ken, Just a personal observation, but the Alnico II pickups have a smoother top end and softer attack (vs. Alnico V or Ceramic) - not as bright/harsh. Here's a link to the Dunan site - they have some great 'comparison' sound clips (same riff, same amp, same settings, same guitar, same player, same session, different pickups). Great way to simply hear what different types of pickups sound like (Alnico V vs Alnico II vs Ceramic; Single vs Rail vs Stacked). www.seymourduncan.com/support/audio-samples/strat_replaceme/

I took a chance and friggin' love 'em, James went home after Z fest and put them in several (Every?) Fender he has ! For the $$ they kill. FWIW, I had a Voodoo T60 Tele bridge pup and it was hands down the best I've had. But I'm not sure if Peter is reachable these days? For $64 give the GFS '64 Texas a shot.

I have a set of Vintage Fralins in a 57 RI. They rock in that guitar, big sound. I got a set of Pure Vintage Toneriders in another 57' and likewise, damn near as good but a 1/3 the price of the Fralins. Really depends on the timber tho i find. Seems the heavier my guitars the better the tone. damn it im 42 and the back just loves a lighter axe. Oh well tone comes first right? Else we wouldnt be here:-)
