Well, I guess I'd better get ready to hear John say, "I TOLD YOU SO." Many, many moons ago, like others here, I owned the G12M greenback speakers in old 4 x 12 cabs (and never was a great "fan.") The G12H30 became my go to speaker, and with a few other alnico types, I never cared to deviate.
So I decided to take the M12 plunge. I had read the posts here dissing the Greenback in the M12, and I was wondering what speaker to upgrade. Then, Josh at Humbucker (+1000) tells me to trust Doc's ears and NOT upgrade to the G12H30 like I usually do. Sooooo, I ordered it late on a weekday and knew it would not get shipped for 24 hrs. I started to dial Josh up and change the speaker 20 times in the 24 hr period. But patience prevailed (for once).....
Soooo.... Last week: The M12 Combo arrives....greenie and all. I look at the speaker, and kinda frown...."not to worry, I think....there's a "well-broken-in" G12H30 in my shop."
I plug her in and fire her up. Absolutely GLORIUS. I mean it...it's all there..... No pedals, just a cord....incredible....."Could I be wrong, I wonder?.... No, I'm never wrong.... when I juice this amp, thats greenie's gonna fart out....." So I crank the little beast, and say to myself "Holy moly....what have I been missing?? The M12 and the Greenie are fabulous....."
So my doubting mind makes me plug into a Dr. Z 1 x 12 conv cab with my fave G12H30......and it sounded good....really good, but nothing like the Greenie.... I plug in to a real Jensen P12N alnico from the early 60's..... same result. I've since given it a run thru an Eminence Legend and a Weber 12F150, and arrived at the same conclusion...... That greenie flat gives the nicest crunch possible where the G12H30 was a bit bright and thin, tho the bottom end was nice, and the other speakers just seemed a bit sterile in comparison to the greenie's 25 watt capacity "giving it up" better than the other speakers.
And Now, The AMP:
The M12 may just be the best gigging amp I have ever found. I play medium size gigs almost exclusively (usually big outdoor patios and a few large clubs). I have a loud 5-piece band with an "Animal-type" drummer..... We played Thursday night and really got LOUD. The M12 held its own with no prob as long as I was running a clean boost, and that's certainly where it shines.....I had my Monza (my fave) right atop the M12, and never needed to turn it on.
The M12 is incredibly articulate, with tons of touch sensitive dynamics. It sings fabulously, and the controls are very interactive and musical. I love playing it at medium volume in my jam shack with just a cord. The harmonics are all there and the bloom and color just pour out of this amp. Pedals all seem to have more individual character (good) with the M12 as compared to when they are used in amps that color the sound. My M12 is a 1 x 12 combo of course, so I can tilt it against a back wall and crank it up. I can't wait for it to get 100+ hrs on it...... It's already mighty nice right now!!!!!
So, in conclusion:
Digging the greenback (thanks John), and REALLY Digging the AWESOME M12 for sure....
Thanks Doc Z! Another winner, Bro!
