I had the Fat 50's in a strat. I didn't really do it for me could of been the guitar. I love the Custom 54's. I have them in a MIJ strat. They have a real tweed sound to them. YMMV

Yeah, so much of it lies in the guitar wood and the neck too! That being said i DONT like T-specials. To me they are a little too hot and therefore choke off some of the open chimey-ness that IS a strat. Generaly to me they sound a little boxey compared to a Lollar or fralin. But ya know what, thats the beauty of all this stuff, cause they just may be perfect in someones elses hands!

Tried Tex specials in a couple of configurations (strat/tele) and just don't care for them. Groovergeorge swears by his 54's, I got a pup swap due anyway...Think I'll give 'em a try..

NICE! I'm thinking of trying a blues special in the bridge of my Strat, or the lollar equivilent. I'd like just a bit more mid's but not lose too much of the air that i have now. It's a 96' (first year) Custom Shop 60' relic, and i'm not sure what Vince Cunetto put in it, but they sound REALLY nice. They're definately custom shop somethings, just dont know what. In fact back then they may be custom wound, ive read that they're softened by him to replicate the oldies. They seem pretty close in output to a set of fralin Vintage hots in a 73' maple neck i have, so i'm thinking one step up to the specials might not be too much, ??

In my strat, pickups are -
neck, Custom Shop 69 (Abigail Ybarra) middle, Fat 50's reverse wound bridge, Tex. spec.
These are exactly as I wanted...the reverse wound Fat 50's lends itself to noise cancelling in 2 & 4...and with the Tex. Spec. in 2, the sound is amazing...that's where i leave it 75% of the time. I do agree, the Tex. spec is a bit hot in comparison to the others, but, i eventually got the feel of it...
