Well I had been looking at this Fender Strat-O-Sonic with humbuckers ( available with P90's too ) at a local music store that had it there for some time . It was slightly used and the owner wanted to move it as it had been hanging for about a year so he gave me $800 for my Robt. Cray Strat in trade ( yes , that's right and I only had to pay a small difference as he felt he can sell the other for near new price . i7.photobucket.com/albums/y255/nitehawk55/PANA1296.jpgi7.photobucket.com/albums/y255/nitehawk55/PANA1297.jpgThe Strat o sonic has a chambered mahogany body and a tunable hardtail assy of their own design . It also has a 24 3/4" scale which gives it a Gibson feel . Pups are Fender design ( I think ) and they sound good , a nice balance of warm with enough brightness and attitude . Neck is bolt on maple W/ rosewood and I guess the Gibson I would describe this guitar closest to would be an SG but one that plays nicer and fits you better , I could never get used to the awkward unbalanced feel of SG's although I liked the warm biting sound . Just something new I thought was cool and it's done in a vintage burst BTW . It's a late 2005 W' the 2006 60th emblem on the back of the headstock . I believe Fender only made these for 2 years and also had a Tele vesion called the Telesonic .

The first guitar I bought with my own money was a super nice SG. So your "fits better" comment is almost lost on me. I do know what you mean though. Show me! We wants to see pictures!

Pretty. I am a Gibson person at heart so mahogany and humbuckers are high on my list of good things. I am curious how it sounds with the maple neck and the chambered mahogany. I know nothing of Fender's hummers. Stop me before I ask for sound clips. ;-)

The mahogany and chambering in the body add a warmth and sustain which is typical of that design , I don't find the maple neck seems to factor into that much . The pick ups are called a "Fender Hot "and are made lord knows where and by who , but they sound pretty good so I'll leave them in for now . With the build plus it having the Gibson 24 3/4"scale certainly gives it the LP jr or SG feel and tone , it is totally unlike a Strat which was Fender's objective and it looks like they did it . Not what I would call a stand out guitar as far as looks go , it's kind of homely looking but lovable I did some rersearch and Fender first introduced these in 2003 only with the "black dove " P90's and in a 1 or 2 pick-up version so they were after the LP jr vibe somewhat and also the Tele-sonic was introduced with Dearmond pickups at the same time . The humbucker version like this one was introduced in 2005 and as far as I know discontinued after 2006 so there will not be many of these having only a 2 year run .

very cool - I remember seeing some of these with the black dove pickups (p90 style singles) . remember likin' the Telesonic - but it wasn't quite right for me at the time (or maybe I was blinded by something more sparkly. d'oh! ).... I probably should'a given it more time. as for the Stratosonic? very, very cool idea. crank it up and let 'er rip ;D
