Congratulations Lee - I'm looking forward to your 1st gig report. Sharp lookin' guitar for sure (with that hot Texas sun at the 12th fret?)

Looks WAY cool to me, including the knobs and no dot markers. The fretwork on it looks amazing.

OOOOOOOOOHHHHH....
Knobs/switch tip?.....ummmmm....Were it mine....prolly hava go Dome/black Top Hat. Juss me, tho. MITE grow on me. I'd give it time....
The lack of position markers, wud mess w/my feeble hayd....LARGEly. I suppose, I cud "fanger" it out, tho.
Actually.....I'd put the knobs/switch tip in the smoker, on super low heat, & HELLA smoke for about 8 hours. SERiously!! I've done it b/4.
LOVE/LOVE the 5 bolt thang. DIG the color(s).
I rekon ur reddy to part w/that Johnny now....huh? Call me.

Awesome guitar, Lee--love the color-scheme. Very '50s automotive--which is really what the whole Fender design aesthetic was about.

Yeah--I actually dig those knobs, but I can see how you might have some doubts about them, too. Maybe give 'em some time.

Stan, I bought it used, so I just got it as is..... It's a "one off" in Thorn's gallery labeled as the G/T #45. Tho he said he could build me one exactly like it if I wanted a new one..... Randal, I am not sure about the neck cut....and I am not sufficiently educated on the sawing techniques to venture a guess ..... And I guess I'll just have to see about the knobs, and how they feel/look/mojo, etc..... No dots? it does have some on the sides as a couple of you noticed. I have a D18 Martin with a clean (no dots) ebony fretboard slab (does have side markers tho) and that doesn't bother me... however, this will be a gigging guitar where I'll need the upper registers (in all light situations) so I might have some dots inlaid by one of my luthier buds if I really like this guitar.....I'll post a follow-up report when she arrives....

Lee--basically if the grain in the neck runs vertical as you look at the heel with the neck lying flat, it's quarter-sawn. If the grain runs horizontal, it's slab-cut. A quarter-sawn neck will supposedly resist warping, while a slab-cut neck is supposedly comparatively prone to warping. Wood being wood, there's a whole lot of in-between, which is where the great majority of Fender necks are located. Even if a tree is properly sawn on the quarter, it doesn't necessarily mean that the grain in each blank will be perfectly 90 degrees. Selecting only perfectly 90-degree quarter-sawn blanks would require tossing out a hell of a lot of perfectly good maple. But that's part of what you pay for when you buy a good custom guitar. Here's a pretty good explanation: www.wisegeek.com/what-is-quartersawn-wood.htm

SO you DiD go for it. ;D Very unique looking instrument. I'm like the others....give them knobbies a chance. That is one fine looking fret board/fret work. What are the pickups? Can't wait to hear your impressions when it arrives. Congrats~

Lee,
I have it in my head to have Grosh build a Strat style guitar for me next year, since I am so smitten by the first guitar they built for me; however, Fat Sound Guitars, who sells both Grosh and Ron Thorn Custom Guitars, tells me I should check out a Thorn before I make a decision. So, would really appreciate, if you have the time, if you would post a detailed report of the sound, fit 'n finish, playability, and vibe of the guitar once you've spent some time with it. I imagine some other Z brethren might also be interested in such a report.

The most impressive part of that guitar (imo) is the string "ferrule" where they go through the body.
I think that approach would certainly sound better than a regular tele through-body setup (and way better than toploader)--
