Anybody ever try this? I have seymour duncans in there now (sh-5 & '59) and it's too heavy for what I want to play. When I bought the guitar I wanted more of a GNR hard rock kind of tone. Now I'm gravitating more towards cleaner, blues rock tones (acdc/zztop/aerosmith etc..)
I'm using 11's on the guitar now, I'm sure bringing it down to 9's would make a difference...
Will the holes cut out for the pickups be too big? Or do filtertrons fit right into humbucker holes? How would this sound?

I wouldn't go lower in your string guage. Filters are smaller than your standard humbucker ut if you go to TV Jones' website he sells english mounts so you can mount filters in standard humbucker cavities. As for the sound, I don't know. Filters in Gretsch are usually put in hollow or at the very least chambered bodies so there's always air in there as apposed to a solid piece of wood. I don't think it would sound bad at all and it would probably get you where you want to be. Are you looking at stock filters from Gretsch or something from TV? If you're looking at the TV line you may want to email him with the sound you're after and see what his recommendations are. I'm sure even if you got the pickups, installed them and didn't like them he'd exchange them for ones you do like. Just taking a stab from the bands you mentioned I'd say the powertron is up your alley from TV. But yeah. Leave your string guage alone. Hope this helps!

I don't know which one I should get, which are better tv or gretsch? I think the powertrons might have too much output for that guitar because the guitar itself is really thick and I don't want it to be too meaty....

TV Jones are very nice, even some Gretschs come with them standard. My guess is the model for you is the Powertron, PAF output (hotter than classic Filtertron) but with Filtertron flavour. But I'd shoot them an email first.

Well, the Gretsch pickups now are a lot better than pre FMIC filters, but I'd still go with TV's stuff. He's a great guy and real helpful. He won't rest until you're happy and he's got more variety than your one option with a Gretsch filter. That and I don't think Gretsch offers a return policy with their filtertrons like TV.
Maybe you're right about the powertron being too meaty. The reason I suggested it is because Billy Gibbons uses them in his Billy Bo. You can search on youtube for him and I know there's some blues lessons where he's playing his Gretsch. Maybe it's the air (those Billy Bo's are awesome) but it sounds REALLY great.
I have some TV Jones Classics in my annie and I can get a wide variety of tones out of them.

Oh and if you go to tvjones.com you can listen to sound samples to help narrow your search.

Here's a clip of my TV Classic equipped annie. I wish I recorded it louder but living in an apartment I always feel bad when I turn it up even a little.

Very nice clip.. thank you very much for your help, I appreciate it. It is a tough choice, my explorer is really thick so I don't want it to be too much on the beefy side. On the other hand, if Billy only uses the powertrons then maybe it's what I'm looking for, but the billy bo guitar isn't as thick as a big explorer.. I don't know!! tough choices, I emailed tv so we'll see what they say!

Yeah, the Billy Bo's not only thin but it's completely hollow too. I'm sure TV'll be able to help you out.
