I had a tech once tell me that graphite saddles would be good for my lone star strat. How would these compare tonally to basic metal saddles?

They deaden the tone. Try some titanium saddles, I like those better. If you're breaking strings I'm assuming the tech has already polished inside the saddle and put lube under the string at the contact points?

Awesome, I'll give those a try. Thanks for the help. Yeah, it helped with the string breaking but made my guitar sound really dark.

I use to break strings like mad. At least one a gig, acoustic and Strat. I went with graphite saddles and love them. I didn't notice a tone change. I've got a few other strats with stock saddles that I don't play much because none of them can touch the tone of my number 1. If they deaden the tone, it's not very much.

There are guys out there that swear by them ( Kenny Wayne Shepperd) and there are guys that claim that they screw with that biting tone that a strat is famous for. I fall into the second category and after trying them went back to traditional saddles.
The best way is to try them out for yourself, they are all that expensive and if you don't like them just go back to your old setup.

what manufactures make the graphite saddles? i'd say GraphTech would be one of the popular choices. i'm not a big fan since i can hear them changing the sound. i perceive them as dull attacks and less sustain, overall deaden the guitars but i've heard from others who feels that they thicken their sounds, so you never know.

Graphtech? I think they make some now that are metal with just a graphite insert. Those would sound better. If you play loud with a lot of gain you probably wouldn't mind the tone difference. You may even like it.

Ditto sbrantley.
Love the reduced string breakage, never noticed any change in tone. Not that *I* could hear, anyway...

I probably fall in the 'play loud' catagory, but I don't use a lot of gain. I do use some though. Maybe that's why I didn't notice the change.

+1Billyguitar. Titanium saddles, either Strat or Gibson type, make a big tonal difference. Rick

I don't notice much difference. You'll hear more difference between Day 6 of your strings' life and Day 7, IMO.

I've used the graph techs on my strat for around 15 years, I was always breaking strings before. The sustain and the tone have been great on this guitar but... You guys start my wheels tuning. Which titanium saddles have you used? I noticed Robert Cray uses the graph techs and he gets a nice tone out of his strat and Matchless. Reading these threads can cause monius spendicus!

I have DeTemple titanium saddles on my tele and it improved the tone and sustain dramatically ! It's now my No. 1 guitar , as before it was just another player .

I have Graphtech nut on my custombuilt Warmoth Telecaster - can't say I notice any change in tone The bridge is a Gotoh Bridge with individual adjusments and metall saddles though - works for me. The guitar stays in tune, sustain is better than my old Tele, the strings don't chirp or get stuck on the nut grooves. The Gotoh Bridge doesn't cause the strings to break either. A good simple stable setup. Cheers: Dixiechicken:

That is just a f@#kin' beautiful guitar! I'm going ahead and try some titanium saddles. I see djc's voted for the DeTemples, anyone try the KTS titaniums? They're $80 as opposed to $120 for the DeTemples. I don't really "see" any real difference other than price. Thanks

I tried the Graphtechs once on my ol' beater strat, took 'em RIGHT back off. Funny thing was, they sounded (and still sound) GREAT on my friend's Warmoth parts-o-caster. I might've just been a little....unnerved by the whole process, shoulda left 'em on for at least a gig or two.

I had em on a strat years ago and didnt care for em but on my G&L ASAT Classic with the 6 saddle bridge, the graphtech saddles were the ONLY thing that would prevent me from breaking the little E string every other night! I only have them on the E and B, the rest are the stock saddles.

My Lentz has titanium saddles. They're not as hard as steel! they've taken on slight grooves. I put a little nut sauce on the saddles when I restring. I just plated three gigs in a row and no string breakage. I don't normally play more than two but one of those was only 90 minutes. Try the titaniums with some lube. better tone and less breakage, I'm sold!

Titanum sound different to ya? Sometimes the smallest details make the biggest difference. What kind are they? ...and the big question...(didja tell Scott?) ;^)

They came on it! Scott likes them. He's funny, a while back he was dissing Tone Pro stuff like crazy and now he's using it on the Kroyden. What that really means is he's open to new things and just needs to be pushed.

I had a tech once tell me that graphite saddles would be good for my lone star strat. How would these compare tonally to basic metal saddles? I installed a set of the Graphtech saddles on my ES-135 (along with a Tone Pros bridge) because the stock unit had become a Buzz-O-Matic. It fixed the buzz but made no difference that I could discern with regard to the tone or sustain of the guitar. Cheers, -Dana

I put a set of Graphtech (tusc/graphite impreg) on my American Strat. Tired of breaking strings. I hated the black color...but the results were very good. I think they sound better that the steel saddles that I removed...and now for 3 years I have not broken a string at the saddle! I have good bite and attack..no muddyness. After I purchased these saddle GT came out wioth the Metal saddles with a small graphtech insert. Can't vouch for these...but they look a lot better! Ed
