i just got a set of these called Height Adjustable Pole tuners by Gotoh and they feel quite good: if you look at the photos, they look quite authentic from the back: and once installed they look OK from the front as well. but you can adjust the height of each tuner and lock the height. i don't want to rant about how sloppy Klusons and Kluson types get in about a year. but you all know what i'm talking about i think. as you use them, they develop some "slops" so that there is a varying degree of space before the string pitches change as you turn them. if you don't think you've never had this problem, you aren't just noticing it because they all have this problem regardless of when they were made (as in vintage, modern, etc) pretty much out of the box and they just get worse. anyways, i'm always looking for a better feeling Kluson types and i've found Gotoh copies to be the ones to get but these HAP tuners feel much better than the standard ones they make. they feel smooth and tight. their standard ones feel a bit too tight out of the box and feel as if they need to be broken in somehow (which usually means needs a bit of slop). not these though. they feel just right. i hope they don't slop up too much in the next few months, though. btw, they also make HAP and locking tuners (lock the strings as well as the post height).

Both of my Grosh guitars have the Goto locking tuners, and they are just dandy.

Just plain locking. HAP sounds like a nice additional feature. Sometimes it seems my D string is just barely getting enough nut tension - a slightly shorter barrel would be nice on that string for sure.

On my Les Paul-69 the Kluson tuners wore out - the guitar wouldn't stay in tune. Replaced them with Groovers - no problems since.
I totally agree "mudskipper" - to my eye - Klusons look and feel like crap.

I tried the Gotoh locking keystones (they didn't have HAP), and thought they were a big upgrade. I also have a gotoh tune o matic bridge that is very nice.

I like Kluson a lot. I had my EC Strat for 10 1/2 years and had no degradation in their ability to hold tune. They also sound different than the heavy aftermarket alternatives. The two Strats I have now have 'em and there great too.

I like Kluson a lot. I had my EC Strat for 10 1/2 years and had no degradation in their ability to hold tune. They also sound different than the heavy aftermarket alternatives. The two Strats I have now have 'em and there great too. it's not entirely the ability of "hold tune" that is at issue but the mesh of the gears. as far as i know, worm gears don't go backwards with tension, right? a set of Klusons with a great amount of slop can hold tune if strings were to be tuned UP to correct pitches (well, OK, you should never tune down to pitch but that's another story). i still have a set of 3+3 Kluson type on my goldtop LP and they stay in tune despite their slops. and i've got vintage real Klusons that "hole tune" as well. tuners with slops/dead-turns are hard to use and most Klusons develop that from normal use. it also depends how often strings are changed, how much one is willing to tolerate the sloppiness and stuff like that. At any rate, the HAP set just has a good out-of-the-box feel to them unlike standard non-HAP tuners. so they must be doing something different in the manufacturing process.
